It Started with Merkel’s Policies

Every viable country has a certain amount of chauvinism.  There is a certain pride, a sense of being special.

The refugee crisis required some kind of intervention, but not the kind that Angela Merkel decided to push down the throats of all members of the European Union.

To show off, to prove herself a ‘saint’ Merkel opened the Borders and demanded everyone else did the same.  Other nations balked, they put up fences, they made it very unsafe to try to enter.

But the United Kingdom, annoyed beyond speech at being pushed around by the European Union, primarily Merkel voted to leave the European Union.

Brexit was unexpected, and while some wandered in confusion, other groups rejoiced.  Other groups pointed to terrorism, and had so much proof they didn’t need to Google.

The idea of immigration, even in nations as the United States which was built on immigration, has become rather tricky.  There is a fear, whether real or invented, of being flooded by people of a different culture who have no intent of assimilation.

There has been, and is, a kind of ‘in your face’ pushing of Islam, where those who practice the religion seek to inflict it on others.

In America, building on the influx of South American illegal immigrants, the fear was flamed by Trump who put himself forward as the White Man who was going to take back the White House for White People.

No matter how one tries to offer ‘Alternative Facts’ that was the key feature.  Racism, anti-immigration were the foundations of Trump’s election.

It did not fall from the sky.

The open borders, the terrorist attacks, the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union, all pushed Trump into the White House.

And Trump’s election has inspired all the Right Wing Parties in European Countries, to consider the same kind of policies.

Xenophobic, Islamaphobic, isolationist, political movements are gaining power, a great deal of power.  Parties which were slapped away as ‘fringe’ as now moving closer to capturing the public’s support.

Most nations would accept a small group of immigrants willing to blend into society.   No nation, save Germany, was willing to accept a large population of immigrants who have no intention of assimilation.

Had Germany encouraged the nations of the European Union to create some sort of immigration centre in a country like Turkmenistan, all would contribute and feel good.  And then they would pick and chose how many, if any, they wished to accept.

If America had some huge centre in which all those from South America were housed and vetted before allowing entry to the United States, immigration would be a non-point.

But it has become the centrepiece and is being used by all sorts of politicians to gain mileage.  And each time there is a terrorist attack or the threat of one, the speedometer gets active.

One might say, ‘good deeds never go unpunished’ and Merkel’s actions were simply ‘humanitarian’.  But knowing what a hungry politician she is, how dictatorial, one reads her behaviour slightly differently.  And it might cause her downfall.

    • In the International Relations, decisions are taken in regard to certain issues with broad perspective keeping the analysis reports and reactions received from various countries. Before making open a decision a country should see the reactions, effects, and its consequences of it on other countries and at least on the neighboring countries.

The decision of the German Chancellor to open the gates liberally with a human touch for the Syrian refugees might have gained popularity and made the country 'more-safe-to-stay' on the planet Earth if the rest of the EU countries accepted and welcomed the decision with a philanthropic approach. But, the situation was not congenial for other EU Nations to accept such decision.
There were continuous terrorist attacks and bombing in many EU Nations. The reason for such attack starting from Charlie Hebido were all, it seems, directed towards terrorizing the EU Nations not to allow the Syrian Refugees into their respective countries which were countered by the Germany by liberally allowing entry to Syrian Refugees in millions. The Germany took a decision quite contrary and unacceptable to the other E.U. Nations. It should have studied the situation and would have obtained the opinion of the other EU Nations.
But, the U.S from the beginning has viewed the entire situation with a suspicion and started delaying the draft guidelines in allowing the immigrants which never took any final shape and gave an opportunity to Mr. Trump to cash upon during the U.S Presidential elections. He made his statements quite in line with those of the remaining EU Nations which assured the safety of the Europe if he is elected as the President of the U.S.
Mrs. Clinton could not see the effect of the statements of Mr. Donald and totally avoided the issue without any firm stand on such important issue.

      • When one doesn't 'read' the population they are to represent, difficulties arise. Allowing immigration without any plan, just opening gates is not sensible.
