Working with a depressed Co-worker

This is not an easy task to do. Having a depressive co-worker does not help moral at all. It is worse when your co-worker is you bosses wife.

Everyday there is a struggle with the smallest things. Honestly i am hear working because she can’t handle the workload. She does little to nothing but acts like it is hell. It is hard to deal with people like this. Especially for me because i have no idea what to do in these situations.

Sitting down, working in my own space and suddenly she starts talking about things i would rather not here about, her sexual life, her actual life, work life. This is too much to handle. I get stressed out by the fact that she is stressing out over the smallest basic things in life.

She has had a major depression before and had to take pills to get treated, but she decided to stop taking them and supposedly was getting better, but recently she has been getting some relapses and they come more often.

What are you going to do in a situation like this? The only thing i can do is just sit down and listen. What else? Sometimes just the fact that someone listens helps but she is impossible to help. It is overwhelming.

I think she has to go to a doctor to start seeking some more treatment because this can get worse and things like this is never good getting worse.

She has been to a therapist but not about her depression, She doesn’t seek help, i know, depressed people don’t seek help, but we are trying our bests to keep her spirits high and that is not easy. On calm days at work it is fine, she looks OK but then the stress kicks in and she goes crazy, yelling at everything and everyone for only needing to send an email or do an important payment.

I am hoping the next time she goes to the doctor she seeks mental help and not sexual help.

    • Most folks say if you're not happy at your job, then go get another job. Simple huh? NOT! Finding a new job is not so easy. However, if that is the solution and you can do it, then do it!

In your case, sounds like getting another job is not the answer. So you have to just deal with it! Right?

Well what you're dealing with is not too hard to deal with. You have to develop “selective hearing”. It means you train your mind to hear the things you need to hear to get your job done and all that other stuff gets blocked out!

I'm not saying don't have some compassion and consideration for the lady. Depression is very real and very serious. Just remember. Your boss' wife is the person who is depressed and not you! Don't let her make you sick too!!

You have to support yourself and whoever it is you're working for … husband, kids, etc. When you get up to go to work each day, you go there to work That's your goal. Nothing else! Stay focused.

    • Maybe you need ear plugs so you can't hear her venting at small things? (joke!) She really needs the help of a psychologist/psychiatrist.

It is her who should stay out of the office to prevent "terrorizing" her co-workers by her bouts of depression.
