United Nations Security Council Resolution Vetoed By Russia

   For the eight times Russia has vetoed the United Nations Security Council Resolution concerning the possible investigation of Syria for the recent chemical attacks where almost 80 innocent men, women and children has died in the incident.

The draft resolution was presented to the United Nations Security Council by the United States, the United Kingdom and France for the Security Council approval.

It is supposed to pave the way for a fact-finding mission to ascertain the facts and circumstances behind the chemical attacks and who are responsible for it.

The investigation and the fact-finding mission are supposed to be conducted by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons. Under the draft resolution, the Syrian government is supposed to provide some military information such as flight logs starting from the day of the alleged attack as well as to provide the necessary access to the airbase for a complete investigation.

This investigation is vital in order to know the truth and who are the actual persons responsible for the chemical attack.

Abuse Of The Veto Power By Russia

   It’s about time that the veto rule in the United Nation Security Council be repeal, amended or change so as to be responsive to the present realities of the moment. Instead, any resolution for that matter must always be done through the majority rule within the United Nation Security Council.

The veto rule most often than not is always being used for any political moves or positioning by any members of the United Nation Security Council. The time has comes that this veto rule ought to be abolish once and for all since it is no longer serving its important purposes.

Is there something that Russia is afraid of so as to veto this draft United Nation Security Council resolution? Is Russia afraid that there will be actual findings by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons that indeed President Assad regime is the mastermind behind the attack in conspiracy with Russia?

Or is Russia too afraid to save its face from this incident since it is involve in it? It is clear that Russia would defend Syria as its ally right or wrong and no matter what it may cost to the international standing of Russia in the eyes of the International Community.

The weight of international public opinion is for us to know who is responsible or accountable behind the chemical attack so that those responsible for the attack may be brought to the bar of justice in the International Criminal Court.

If Russia truly believed that it was allegedly the rebel forces whose responsible for the chemical attack, then why did not Russia sponsor any formal resolution in the United Nation Security Council calling for an appropriate investigation against the rebel forces?

By standing side by side with the Assad regime, Russia is becoming a part of the problem and not part of the solution in this chemical attack in particular and the Syrian Civil War in general.

Russia for what it is worth seems to be always against the tide of the international opinion and will always be on the losing side.
