Is The Computer Age The New Frankenstein Monster?

I have read so many critical and negative ideas, opinions, remarks or statement concerning the present phenomenon known as the Computer Age or Digital Age or Cyber Age.

Is the Computer Age bad to our modern society? Assuming that there is indeed a negative effect, does the negative effect far out weight the positive effect? I believe that if ever that there is the negative effect, it is minimal compare to the huge positive effect that the Computer Age has ushered in to our modern living.

The Advent of the Computer Age

I believe that the present century is the most advance in terms of technological invention and innovation that humankind has ever seen or experience in comparison to the previous century or centuries.

The cyber highway has practically destroys the barrier and physical limitation of time and place. Our world population is estimated to be around to be 7.3 billion and almost 47% of this population or nearly half of it nowadays is using the internet. Imagine almost half of 7.3 billion people. That’s simply a staggering numbers!

The number of people using the internet today is very substantial and significant indeed. It implies the interconnectedness of all the people around the world through the World Wide Web and the popularity in the use of the social media and other platforms.

It cannot be deny that the Computer Age makes our communication faster than ever before and our works much easier.

Some people observes that the advent of the Computer Age further separate human beings from each other since everything is becoming a “virtual reality” or becoming too impersonal in every sense of the word because there is no longer a personal human touch in what we are doing and in terms of human interaction.

Such observation is merely apparent than real.

The Computer Age did not create for us a Frankenstein monster that sooner or later would backfire or boomerang against humanity or would be a threat to our very survival or existence.

As long as humans does not lost its humanity and human spirit through technological invention and innovation, the Computer Age will always be the most challenging and exciting period of human history we could ever experience, know and dream of.

It’s How We Make Use of Technology That Matters

By and itself technological invention and innovation is not the problem but how we use the same in the proper way. Just like any other things in life, our use of the computer, mobile phone and other modern gadgets may be subject to abuse.

Take for example the evil creation of viruses which can infect or destroy any computer for that matter; there is also the issue of computer hacking or cyber theft where your personal, financial and other sensitive data may be stolen.

Another issue that comes to mind is the proliferation of many pornographic websites and the fact that other computer websites are being use to recruit persons to advance the cause of terrorism.

On the personal level there’s the issue of cyber bullying.

On the national scale, there’s what you call cyber terrorism or cyber-attacks where one government attack other government by indulging in hacking the computer system or computer network of another government resulting in its total shutdown or breakdown and disruption.

Is technological invention or innovation the culprit to be blame in the above examples and circumstances?

I don’t think so.

In the final analysis, the abuse and misuse of technology is the guilty culprit.

    • You said that the effect of computer age won't backfire. I don't think so. The unprecedented advancement of technology would in any time or era would manifest its defectiveness or shortcomings that would certain wreak havoc for all mankind. It couldn't be denied anymore the cyber bullying, the intrusion of hackers to personal or confidential data for a money or for a nebulous purpose. We are afraid that the war would be handled by a "push button" strategy through computerization.
