Is grammar important?

I have seen many writers on the Internet, who are not native English speakers that ignore proper spelling and grammar rules. And as a result, their blogs look the least unprofessional and in the worst case incomprehensible.

Why is grammar so important?

Proper spelling will prevent you from looking amateur. Even if you are a new writer, the perfect spelling of your article can give the impression of a person who knows what he is doing. I am not a native speaker myself, but I never forget to use my grammar tools.

There is a large variety of online and browser-based tools for checking your style, repetitive words, readability, etc. As well as tools, which you can install on your device and use them locally. They are created to help writers. And many of them offer their services completely free of charge.

Nobody can make the perfect text for the first time without making a single mistake. Practice is what improves the writing skills. Writing more and striving for improvement every day is what will eventually get you the results.

What are some of the common mistakes?

1. Incorrect spelling.

Even if some words can be written out in two or more different ways, depending on the type of English you write, there are mistakes that every spell checker will correct. And it doesn’t take a lot of time to do that.

2. Wrong tense usage and subject-verb agreement.

It is important to follow simple rules like if the subject of your sentence is singular, so should be your verb; you also should be careful about the tense you use and the correct form of the verb in the corresponding tense.

3. Sentence length and style.

It’s recommended that your sentences are not too long. So if you have a long thought in your mind, you can try and think of a way to split it into parts, at conjunctions, for example.

4. Punctuation.

I’m referring to proper comma usage, correctly placed semicolon, etc. These are helpful for clarifying your sentences and improving the readability of your text.

    • great tips.

True that part of the writers here are Asians, who don't embrace English as the mother tongue language.
Hence, improper usage of English grammar, spelling mistakes are common in articles posted.

I heard that Grammarly is a useful tool to track down mistakes with red underlines but it can be stressful when British and American English are different in spellings.

    • @Nina Many of us get a good grounding that makes us better than some of the Native speakers.

    • In my opinion, grammar is not that important in speaking. In writing, I do think that people should consider the pointers you had mentioned. It is a learning process for some non-native speakers to enhance their writing skills based on grammar principles.

    • Punctuation is the toughest department in my opinion. Literacy base dot com is providing all of us to improve our writing skills and expressions. I do write with and intention to improve my expressions (English) and I am happy to say that it is working well. I am moving ahead in this regard and enjoying this practice a lot.
