I would never give you my books

I love my books as much as any book lover would do and I did not mind lending them to someone until a neighbor whom I found at a public library asking for joke books of a particular writer. My most favorite one and I have almost all books from that particular writer in my personal collection. I agreed to lend him a book for 2 days. He came along with me to my house and in place of one book, selected three of them with a promise to return the same in a day or two.

I never got my books back

I did not ask for the books for a week later he told me that he took those books to his village and forgot to bring them back. I kept waiting for my books. Later I reminded him for my favorite books every time he met me anywhere on the roadside, local market or community meetings but he would cut a sorry figure every time but no signs of my books.  A kiddies query and matching reply but I love my books and never lend them to you.

I made a promise to myself

Meanwhile I went to Bangalore for few months and while I came, back, gone were my books along with my neighbor to some unknown destination. Yes, they have changed their residence to another locality. I did not meet the guy ever since but made it a point to never let anyone touch my books at any cost, forget about lending them.

I am so sad for my lost books and the worst that could happen that the books I gave away are out of print and not available in the market. I am waiting for their next edition. I wish, I could get hold of that guy and could manage to get them back someway somehow.

    • Hi suny,

I perfectly understand how you feel when that friend or acquaintance of yours failed to return the precious books that you owned. I’m sorry to hear your story but it do sometimes happened in life.

The kind of incident that you have narrated has happened to me many years ago. Someone borrowed from me some law review books. Unfortunately that guy who borrowed from me likewise never ever return these books which he borrowed from me. I’m not sure if he ever passed the examination.

I am not selfish with my books and I could easily lend it to someone who really needs it. But it is really disappointing if someone is mean not to return the same.

In that case you felt really offended because of the breach of trust and confidence. That’s the very reason why we lend our books to the person who needs it, due to our trust and confidence with that person and at the same time our good intention of somehow to help other people.

Every book lovers know how important our books are to us. Book is our life and our friend and constant companion. We don’t just get any of our books for free but purchase it with our hard earned cash or money.

Our books are considered an extension of our personality for it is our own personal property. It is really very disappointing when others failed to return what is ours.

I even consider it stealing if you didn’t return any borrowed things not necessarily with regards to books for that matter.

Anyway, just like you’ve said, it is a lesson learned not to part with our precious possession such as our book to just anybody.

If and when there will be a time that there will be someone who will borrow any of my book collections I will politely decline and say no this time.
