So most recently I have been hearing from my colleagues and friends much about their micromanaging boss, ‘Ah..I have had enough – I work so much better without him/her poking his nose in my business’ or more commonly I hear ‘Does he think I cannot do my job or that I don’t do any work?’ It’s very interesting to say the least to hear what everyone has to say about their experiences.
Growing up with a Father that owns a small business I have grown up aroundmicromanagement of life never mind the work place. He interferes in my investments, the career I follow, the education, the people I hang out with, how I utilise my free time and the rare occasion my relationships with my girlfriends. Its’ actually an energy that I have grown around and to be honest it has shaped me in many positive ways. When I was younger of course I hated it, as all we preach as teenagers is ’freedom,’ but since I have grown old and took a passion into my father’s work ethic and entrepreneurship I have actually learned to manage micromanagement pretty well and I have evidently shown this at my workplace.
The great thing about micromanagement from my perspective is that you grow on your focus, and starve your distractions. You develop much quicker and in fact become much more resilient and most importantly your more prepared. And if your someone that really wants to do well in career life – you become automatically more strategic with your every day work – ‘answers at the tip toes.’ My theory is managers that are micromanaging are very easy to counter – they ask the same questions and particularly only see things that benefit them. So what do you do? You answer them with the truth but organised, structured, pre planned and if there is a problem know there is a solution you are working on or if you have a problem, you should escalate before the boss comes knocking on your door.
Positive mindset is important when dealing with micromanagement. Your boss has many skills some of which are useful and some of which are lacking. It is crucial at your early days at work – you should observe and pick up on the skills your boss has to offer – its’ only self developing. Creating a positive day at work is important and from my practise I have become awkwardly excited about being challenged – but that might be because I enjoy a challenge. And in a challenge we must always be thinking how to be in front of our competition – it goes back to thinking strategically.
So learn to be ahead of your game – don’t put pressure on yourselves but know that in micromanagement you must reap the content of your work and know it in and out in order to tackle your boss – or in my words to let your stakeholders know – you’re in control and will deliver in time. Micromanaging only occurs because your boss wants to be in control all the time – but we all do it – it even happens on a Saturday night when we want the TV remote.
Be confident, structured, organised and know that you’re only adding value to your career journey and to your organisations needs.

If I have this kind of boss, I will definitely resign working with him.It is fine to be controlled by a boss and be scrutinized. Only if this boss is competent enough to handle the company.Once I had observed that he is incompetent, there is no need to stay in the company.
I can still remember my former boss who showed incompetence and totally affected the team's project. The team tried to compromise and compensate the shortcomings. But then, I got tired of extending my patience to the limit. I finally decided to disengage and resigned with a reason. That is, I can't work with such incompetent boss.
