Revisiting olympics for indians has never been so difficult. It was olympics where india, despite carrying a contingent bigger size than in previous olympiad performed dismally. 1.25 Billion population had great expectations over the athletes. So much so all of us expected india to exceed the medal tally they got in London Olympic and also fetch a elusive a gold medal. But it turned how wrong was our expectation over the athletes. Excepting the two girls who managed to save us blushes of returning empty handed. All performed so bad that one wonders how they even managed to qualify for these olympics. Many stalwarts who previously won medal in olympics failed miserably. The reason, it can be a combination of factors.
One. Indians lacked hunger to win a medal. Just for the sake of representing india, they came, represented and went back home. There was no grit, gumption to win a medal.
Two. Indian athletes remain the same players they were in previous olympics. Neither they improved or tried to innovate their strategies. Whereas the foreign players even coming from small countries innovated their techniques and improved their style of play to outwit us.
We should be really ashamed that many individual players performed better than us indians combined. For example seeing Phelps medals tally, it reminds how he can be called Phelps Republic. Many countries including india failed to match the tally he got. It showed how a individual won so many medals and how we as country failed to win a single gold medal.
Its time we wake up from the slumber and no longer focus and invest only on stalwarts who brought us glory. We need to plan, invest and focus on young children to get them step on the podium in another 8 to 12 years from now. India needs long term planning to achieve what it needs. Unless we do that, there is no way india could win a gold medal or increase its medals tally.
