Asperger’s

Asperger’s disorder was originally noticed by Austrian pediatrician Hans Asperger in 1944. It’s considered to be a disorder on the Autism Spectrum, on the high functioning end of the spectrum. Individuals with Asperger’s have normal IQ’s and normal to above average verbal skills. The syndrome is characterized by impaired social skills and trouble with non-verbal communication. Individuals with Asperger’s Syndrome often have trouble making friends and forming close relationships. Individuals with Asperger’s are vulnerable to other disorders, possibly due to the effects of the disorder on their adaptive functioning. Current research indicates at least 65% of patients with Asperger’s Syndrome suffer from an effective disorder (depression, anxiety, etc) as well.

Research has shown that those with Asperger’s suffer deficiencies in many areas. Individuals have great trouble identifying and conceptualizing the thoughts and feelings of both themselves and other people. Trouble with impulsivity and a general lack of insight is also common. With new technology, neuroimaging tests have shown structural and functional brain abnormalities which suggest problems perceiving and regulating emotions.

Specialized therapies such as Applied Behavioral Analysis can be used to teach daily living skills. The results often depend on the early intervention however.

Asperger’s is a life long disorder but it doesn’t mean it can’t be overcome. Many people with Asperger’s live happy and productive lives on their on in society today. There are also many agencies which can assist individuals with help living in the community and accessing services if needed.
