The Arrival Of Overseas Filipino Workers

One of the pillars of the economy of the Philippines is the huge remittances and tax of the Overseas Filipino Workers in abroad. The dollars, yens, pounds, dirhams keep pouring in the bank of the country because of these industrious workers.

These workers in blue and white collar are really putting many sacrifices, carrying lots of emotional feelings, missing the family, shedding tears sometimes and enduring the physical hardship of the work just to help the government in its economy.

Most of them are working domestic helpers or as they say DH and they are mostly working in Singapore, Hongkong and in Middle East Asia. Most of them are also in the Canada, Hawaii, Mainland US, Europe countries that includes Ireland, London, New Zealand. And yes Filipinos are also located in Australia, Africa and even in the cruise ships, oil ship tankers. Name a country in the globe which are considered more industrialize than ours and they are there working.

OFW’s contributions to the economy of the Philippines are in volumes—and this does not include the money of Manny Pacquiao and Efren Bata Reyes and other athletes.

Too bad, not all of them are lying in the bed of roses. Many of them meet their bad destiny. Some of them coming home in coffin, if not bedridden because of maltreatment, rape, stress, overwork and other reasons.

But it is afact that Indeed, the Philippine government accords high priority to the protection of the Overseas Filipino Workers working in the Middle East and North African countries, especially those who are working in conflict areas.

Although there have been efforts to strengthen bilateral labor relations between the Philippines and receiving countries, there is still considerable uncertainty about how the protection and well-being of Filipino workers far from home can be assured.

The repatriation of Overseas Filipino Workers in several prone-conflict countries in Middle East and North Africa has been one of the many difficult tasks that Philippine missions in those areas have had to carry out.
