Make Watching TV a Fun and Learning Time

Do you know that the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend that children two and under should avoid TV and other media altogether?

TV is one of the most powerful forces in shaping our children’s lives.  It is difficult to avoid , so let’s make it more enjoyable and a learning experience for our children when they are watching it.

Plan Ahead

Pick out shows that are appropriate for the age of your children.

If it’s properly planed, television can can be an instrument for children to learn language, behavior, how to deal with certain situations, and encourage them to explore what they’re watching with their questions.

Watch Together

This is a good time to cuddle and bonding with your children.

Allow the TV themes to shape the conversation by asking and answering questions that come up.  This is a great time to also teach your children family beliefs and values.

    • I couldn't believe only 39 minutes talking to the kids per week! Even on a bad day, I spend that much time in an afternoon talking to my kids....

      • I have seen children as young as 2 on tablet at a restaurant without a word to the parents many times, and the parents are on their phones. It is sad really when family dinner time is not being utilized for communication!

    • I think when children watch with parents, that is good.
If parents just use TV as the babysitter, then that is the saddest thing in life.
It all boils down to how the parents manage it.

    • The best thing for the toddlers to learn is being with their biological parents while watching appropriate children TV programs. It is considered the basic necessity if we referred to Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs.

The downside of this, some parents use TV as an alternative babysitter of their children. I am not fabricating a story. It happens in real life. We can also add the other modern gadgets. They are considered instant nannies of the children.

    • I cannot imagine any kid being left alone while watching tv. That is the main reason they learn not to have any real people around them. Their virtual world becomes theirs.
