7 Natural Mosquito Repellents That Are Not Toxic

Spring is coming fast and in some areas people are complaining of mosquito outbreaks already. Usually we just go down to our local drug store and buy a repellent advertised to keep the mosquitoes at bay. DEET, or diethy-meta-toluamide , is an ingredient in many commercial repellents. It has been found that prolonged use of DEET causes damage to brain cells, can cause behavioral changes and even has some harmful interactions with some medications. The toxic affects of this chemical are such things as reproductive disturbances, genetic material mutations and disorders in the central nervous system. This slightly yellow oil absorbs into the skin and goes directly into the bloodstream. Side effects can be symptoms of skin irritation, rashes, numb or burning lips, dizziness, difficulty concentrating, nausea and headaches.

There are several natural and non harmful options for repelling these insects. Here are seven:

1. Lotus is known to kill mosquito larvae. In new research published by the Asian Journal of Tropical Medicine it is said to be an effective repellent. The Lotus grows in water and since this is where the mosquitoes breed it seems to be a very natural option to put in backyard ponds to keep them away from your house.

2. Lavender oil can be diluted with coconut oil or sweet almond. It is a commonly used repellent. It smells wonderful and you can use it in candle or oil forms.

3. Catnip is another option and is actually 10 times more effective than DEET.

6. Good options also are organic Need seed oil or soy oil. Neem oil is another natural deterant that is more effective than DEET. Organic soy oil is found to be as effective as DEET according to a study by the US National Research Council.

7. Black pepper in ground or oil form has been found to be effective in keeping mosquitoes at bay.

      • They sure are. Making sure your child doesn't have soaps or perfumes on her body may help too. Mosquitoes can be attracted to a person's scent. Also, be sure water is not setting in areas like puddles or even bird sanctuaries. They are attracted to the water too and hatch in it.

    • That's a good information. It is the best option for people living in tropical countries. During the summer season, mosquitoes are spread out. I am not sure with the garlic consumption to be eaten in raw. But I am sure it is fine to eat it as ingredients to certain menu.

      • Mosquitoes can be torturous. Garlic doesn't have to be eaten raw to be effective. Like I said in the piece, you can roast them and eat them or add them to all manner of dishes.
