Veganism: My Journey to Eating Healthy Without the Guilt

“Veganism” is choosing to eat fruits and vegetables instead of meat, fish, poultry and other meat by-products either for environmental, health or ethical reasons. In a nutshell, Vegans like myself, choose this lifestyle in order to promote a more humane society in which no animals of any kind will be harmed or killed to sustain our diet. Even using materials for clothing or furniture is something some vegans do not condone.

According to statistics, every year, more than 70 billion land animals and around 37 to 120 billion fish are farmed and killed for food. Not only that, these animals suffer from brutal deaths in slaughter houses or cruelly confined in operations informally referred to as “factory farms”.

I once have this craving for chocolates whenever I feel depressed. I used to love sushi and barbecues, chicken Alfredo pasta and pizza with everything on it! Then a friend of mine who is into Vegan diet, asked me to substitute fruits and vegetables instead as my depression became progressive. Eating healthy and organic has given my body a much needed boost, and my mind follows. Since then my health and ethics changed as well and I never looked back. Being vegan has taught me to respect not only my physical and emotional health but also the lives of animals being butchered and slaughtered everyday for food consumption.

Since switching to vegan diet, my health and energy has been transformed and my perspective about eating a whole food plant-based diet changed as I have experienced its benefits to my being. Not only am I making a difference in protecting the lives and conditions of animals in my area, I am also keeping my palette clean enough to taste the real essence of fresh fruit and vegetables by eliminating the animal fat, salt and grease completely from my diet.

As vegans, we respect other people’s opinions, beliefs and choices. But we also need to voice out our opinions concerning our advocacy; what is healthy, what is ethically correct, and what lives are we trying to protect.

    • It was nice to be a vegan. I had tried this when staying in Central Asia for a year. I must say that my preferences changed in this country. After I had accomplished my mission, I lost 10 kilograms. I felt so light and can move easily. It was really a challenge to be in such lifestyle. Since I am a meat lover and consumption of veggies would be a perfect diet regimen. The meat wasn't of good quality and the taste is totally different from my homeland. But then, I stopped being a vegan upon arrival in Philippines' airport.

I salute people who have strong determination to be a vegetarian. One of my friends had this quality and can control oneself not to eat meat.
However, she didn't keep being a vegan. When she was placed in Mongolia, there is no choice but to taste the forbidden meat. The body needs to keep warm in this country and meat is the best option with a glass of vodka. That's the worst sacrifice she had done in her life.
In the health context, our body needs proteins. Protein is building-block of our muscles. However, can still be replaced by other food such fish, milk, etc. At this point, I prefer to have a well-balanced diet.

    • I am not a vegan and don't think I ever will be. But I am eating much more vegetables these days and do enjoy the change in my diet.
