Ubuntu in past used to have Mir display server. They invested a lot of time and money into that server. But in due time they lost a lot of business proposition. And they instead moved to other projects. I can tell you that by spending a lot of money into Ubuntu, they lost a lot of features too. I think Ubuntu’s efforts didn’t paid off. And that made this display server to die. And the wayland already had it’s share of the efforts invested. I think many such small changes made them forget about the efforts anymore on the Mir. I think Ubuntu switching to wayland was inevitable and it is often better to use what is available. Some times not reinventing the wheel is the right way to go. And who knows things can be lot better that way. In this article I want to tell you about how ubuntu is switching to wayland and why that decision was made.
X.Org Server
This was one of the oldest server for the display. Almost every display manager like KDE, Gnome and others used it. And it managed to get things done just fine. But with time and processor demands, I think the move to modern code was necessary. And there was need for many people who wanted to experiment. For example 3D desktop and virtual desktop like features were more smooth on the modern display server. For example, Mir was lot better with the 3D code. And even the wayland has it;s set of 3D presentations too. I think wayland was being pitched for many display manager for the same reasons.
Mir vs Wayland
In past ubuntu was pitched with the discussion of using the display manager for many reasons. I don’t know how many people are aware of this but wayland was meant to be adopted by ubuntu for many reasons. And however there was many others who pitched it. Eventually wayland can be one good display server which was meant to be adopted by many kernel adopters. I think that’s one reason even the FEDORA adopted it too. And they may even choose to do that in future if there are not more updates for the server. I think there is a lot to be done if you ask me for this display server.
Ubuntu Adoption
Now the ubuntu adopting this display server came out of nowhere. And you can see that they are being forced to accept the gnome desktop. And that desktop will run on wayland. Lot of new changes that may get into ubuntu will be now part of the wayland server. It’s sad that they are in this sort of position now. But yeah what ever that is going on it’d be worth saying that ubuntu will find a way to make things changed. And this new display device driver may eventually be adopted by many. I can tell you that if it can handle the 3D effects and things just like the other desktop, it’d be worth checking out.
