TOOTH SENSITIVITY(COMMON BUT A VERY COMPLEX PROBLEM)

Tooth sensitivity or in medical terms dental hypersensitivity affects every second person. It mainly characterized by a sharp, short, shooting pain in response to a stimuli. The stimulus can be hot, cold, air, pressure or chemicals. In some cases pain can be so severe that the patient is unable to tolerate it even though it has such a short duration of occurrence. It is a chronic dental condition and your dentist can really help you in diagnosis of stimulus, help to adapt preventive measures and follow the required treatment protocol.

Tooth sensitivity can occur in both the crown part as well as the root portion of the involved tooth. It usually affects people between 30-40 years of age and its prevalence is more in females as compared to males. It can affect any tooth in the oral cavity ranging from incisors to molars. Gradual or instant loss of outer tooth material that cause exposure of underlying sensitive part called as dentine is the main reason for tooth sensitivity. In case of root sensitivity it is the recession of gums which is the main predisposing factor.

The loss of outer tooth material can occur by itself as a result of wear or aging, but there are also other reasons that cause the same. Tooth trauma, tooth brush abrasion, excessive tooth cleaning and flossing, some oral habits all these are common problems that lead to loss of outer enamel and subsequent dentine exposure.
