Summer is quickly coming on and soon it will be hot out each day. With sun beating down it is a good idea to be applying sunscreen. Here are some facts and tips on the subject:
In 2017 it is estimated that about about 161,790 will get melanoma. Caucasians and men over 50 are more at risk of developing melanoma. Men 80 and older are more apt to get this cancer than are women of the same age. Before this age women are more apt to get it. Men can be more apt to get this cancer too because they are less apt to put on sunscreen.
People with red or blonde hair are more apt to get burns and later cancer. Young women aged 15 to 29 can develop melanoma more readily on the torso or abdomen. This can also be escelated do to high-risk tanning behaviors like indoor tanning.
If a person experiences five or more blistering type sunburns during the ages from 15-20 their melanoma risk is 80 percent more prominent. Ultraviolet ray can ruin young skin and cause wrinkles and cancer later in life. Light clothing is a good idea but if you can see through the sun can get through it too. There is clothing made now that has been treated with chemicals that help to protect against skin exposure to ultraviolet rays. These type of clothing do lose their effectiveness after several washing so it is a good idea to check the label for instructions.
There is a laundry additive now that contains a sunscreen called Tinosorb FD that works for up to 20 washes. You just toss it in the wash and your clothes get UPF of 30.
Kids should cover their faces before having the sunscreen applied and a stick is best to use on the face. Wearing a long brimmed hat is a good idea too. Sunglasses that filter both UVB and UVA rays are recommended for kids of all ages.
If your child does get a sunburn place a cool compress on the burn and then apply aloe vera gel to the burned skin. You can also give them Ibuprofen or acetaminophen to help alleviate pain and give them plenty of fluids. They should get medical attention if they blister or get a fever.
