This is the time of year any juice is good enough to quench our thirst as that is what we go through because of intense hot weather. We make our own fruit juices as we have several fruit trees such cashew, bell fruit, mangoes and cherries. But nothing like a tall glass of sugarcane juice which is available in roadside stalls. These are temporary structures which are only there during this time of year. Sugarcane is a commercial crop this part of the country and is freely available. There are two varieties both are used to make sugar and jiggery. The soft variety is the one that is used for extracting juice as it is light on the machines.
The sugarcane juice dealers have machines that are normally manually operated. I have yet to see any automatic ones around here.
Sugarcane is cleaned and fed into the machine along with a sour lime and juice is extracted. It is normally served with crushed ice. Some vendors add a few other ingredients such as cardamom powder. But I have always preferred it without any of these additives.
Often there will be a long queue. I therefore order for the juice and have it delivered to the house. Juice vendors are seen around the vicinity.
This is seasonal and we only see them around this time of year.
Some prefer to chew sugarcane which also is quite an enjoyable activity but for this one needs strong teeth. I can never think of indulging in it now although during my young days I preferred that to someone extracting juice for us.
We had sugarcane juice in Singapore which was served in contained carved out of fresh bamboos. That was a rare experience and quite innovative.
More and more farmers because of labor problem are giving up on growing sugarcane and then a glass of sugarcane juice will have great taste as that will be sold at exorbitant rates. Anything rare is always expensive.

Our place has a vast of sugarcane plantation. Every September is the start of milling season. Heavy equipment is harvesting the sugarcane. This equipment has to cut the sugarcane into several small pieces and load them to a queue of heavy duty trucks waiting, then these trucks carry those sugarcanes to the nearest mill. We never sell sugarcane in the market, in the mall or even in the street. Though we have a big chance of asking the harvested canes from the guard who is too friendly, but we never dare to ask them. However, there is an occasion that I happen to ask and chew the cane to produce juice in my mouth. It tastes so sweet.
You remind me of my childhood days. My sistere had sugarcane fields. We would go there and the workers to cut as many canes as we wanted. It was a joy chewing the stuff. Then my teeth were strong (lol)

These vendors would use those displayed sugar cane to pressed through the machine and sell the juice to customers.
Germs, bacteria , all contaminated in the sugarcane juice .
Hence, it is better to buy from the farm or might as well, wash and clean them before chewing them off and sucking the juice.
I have tried sugarcane juice and it was pretty good. My son loved it. I had never had it before and when we went to Miami Florida, my oldest sister who lives there took us to Little Havana where they have all types of Cuban stores and restaurants. There was a vendor that served this juice and we all tasted it. Very different.
