So Distressful Moment During Flood In Rainy And Stormy Days In Our Place

When there is rain, there is flood. They are partners and they bring disasters. There is no worry if rain only and no flood. The sound of rain is like music and the sound of flood is like mellow rock. It seems they are mocking the people who less care about the environment. Throw here, throw there is what people do in the country of my birth. Why I say this thing because during my tours in other places, I never see anyone throwing of garbage anywhere. That is one main reason why in Philippines flood becomes a killer flood. When the earth was young, there were fewer inhabitants therefore no occurrence of flood. When I was a child, I never saw a flood. There was no flood even if there was strong storm. Rivers can overflow, but never could it spread anywhere to mean a flood to a flat land, but to go direct to a far wide sea to join there as its final journey and destiny.

In the university where I teach, flood is always rampaging when rain comes. Even if there is no storm as long as there is nonstop rain, flood is inevitable. Last month’s flood in our university stranded five thousand plus college students and teachers. They were in the 3rd floors of the different buildings unable to see the update below and it was too late to know flood reached the first floor of the 5th story buildings. There was one week suspension of classes for classrooms and chairs were so dirty. All the things in our faculty office that is located in the first floor were mostly carried away by torrential flood. That was the first time it happened in our university campus and other parts in the city flood so high. The surrounding areas in our campus are full of establishments, huge buildings and poor infrastructures that evade the flood water to pass through to the sea. There are so many malls erected near our campus like Robinson’s, SM Mega Mall, Lim Ket Kai Center, Gaisano Mall, Gaisano City and more and they are suspected to be the causes of the evasion of the flood water. Our main campus looks like an open sea during flood.

There are many trees planted anywhere in our city even at the middle part, so they are not the causes of flood, but rather the buildings that congested the vicinity of the water passage. There were many cars damaged by flood. I pity the car owners for cars now are so expensive. There were also many books and other ID printing services like computers and ID printers devastated , and more for these offices are located in the ground floor of the university. Flood is indeed disastrous. I was lucky I was no longer in the campus when flooding happened. I looked up the skies that time and I felt so afraid when saw dark clouds, so I immediately ran for home. The next day I learned our campus was like a sea. There are so many occurrences of flood here. In fact, two years ago, I brought my family to the 10th storey hotel in our city after knowing that our place is under storm signal number 3, and at that time 6,800 perished in flood.

Flood cannot be avoided and controlled. The vast water is so heavy and it could smash a hardest fence and building. No expert swimmer can exempt him from a torrential flood. No one can be brave enough to traverse the flood to reach the opposite end where dry land is available, very hard. What is next thought about are loses of lives and damaged properties. Many will become homeless and they have to begin again. It seems flood victims are at the extreme pain of losing their loved-ones and sees their home devastated. Evacuation centers are always available in our city in case a calamity attacks; so there are ready places people to take temporary shelter and safety. People will be in distressed. The only thing people do during flood attack is to save the self. I hate to know flood for I experienced walking above the knee flood in our university campus. There was no choice that time except to wade in flood water. Flood started to rise at eight o’ clock in the evening; so I arrived home dawn. That was a very scary experience in my life walking in very dirty flood. When I tried to close my eyes that early morning to take some hours sleep, all I saw on my mind wide flood all over the campus. After that, and whenever there is flood, I leave the classroom and campus to save myself from deadly flood. I also dismiss my class and let my students save themselves from torrential flood.

May I know if there is also occurrence of flood in your place? Ours here almost once a week flood showdown and we all are having phobia on flood. There is a latest issue of flood in other country abroad and people there were all in distress of flood. It was better a place yesterday when population did not rise and Mother Nature was also friendly. We have to respect the call of nature to avoid raging its power. Now that we have series of floods here and abroad, the reason is CLIMATE CHANGE.

There was an Asian Summit here in the Philippines in 2016, and what they discussed during the summit, was Climate Change. By the way, I observed that Mother Nature seems not happy this time seeing all her children abused her. Lastly, what we do to Mother Nature will go back to us. The abuses made like throwing of garbage to rivers making them polluted and in disaster to pass to go direct to the sea. If we cut trees and not replace them with sapling, then expect a torrential flood to follow during hard rain for no more roots to absorb the continuous flow of flood. If we continue throwing hard materials to the canals, rest assured rain water spares no one for they will freely spread to the flat land.

Should we continue to devastate our Mother Earth nevertheless; thousand lives will perish in the torrential flood ; nowhere to run this time and it’s us to blame.

    • Flood, flood, flood always flood to experience in our university that is why the main campus soon will be transferred to is 300 hectares location two years from now. Many lost valuable properties due to flood. That flood occurred despite no storm only non-stop rains.

    • Yes and so many people die from floods. Its so sad. I cant imagine what i would do in a time like that. My heart goes out to those people

    • @leonora fourie, It is indeed sickening to see and hear about agonies felt by flood victims,The time they lost their homes and properties would surely be a one cause for them to live in distress and solitude for years.

    • I am sure, because those malls were constructed a lot of trees were cut down and your place is now mostly malls. Thus, your school now and your place gets flooded whenever there is rain.

I think , the government forgot to require those malls their water drainage system wherein waters coming from the rain will not be stagnant and would just keep rising because there is nowhere where they can flow to ultimately like a big drainage system.

Our city is also flood prone many years before. Because it is a constant problem whenever it rains, the mayor really had DPWH, think of ways to have the city a good drainage system.

So in a matter of a year, the government constructed ditches and a good drainage system in the city. Now, the city has been flood free for the past years despite the construction of new malls. :)

    • @Dina, Thank you friend for sharing your opinion about flood problem in our city and most specifically in the university where I teach so horrible water or flood height reached the first floor of the building so high that no cars were saved and stranded were 5,000 plus students and teachers, no food, no drink, no light that night they were stranded, so horrible.

We hope here that the government fins the effective solution to stop the occurrences of flood every storm and rainy days.

    • Many building were built, some of them encroaching or blocking water canals, also illegal logging or cutting of trees in the mountains cause flash floods. Some people just throw plastics and other non-biodegradable wastes in waterways, and people encroaching creeks, canals, etc. thus impeding water flow.

    • @acelawrites, That is true, we wonder why they do not care to protect our environment, They like to abuse, they seem blind, heartless. Maybe they just laughed when see fatalities scattered on the ground drowned from flood. Many Filipinos lack discipline. They have to wake up before it is late. They might wake up one day they float in flood.

    • Climate change is the main cause of the many changes of our atmosphere this time. There is always rain here despite not a rainy month. It will be ironical if summer time here there is everyday rain hahaha, it will be a funny one.
