SMOKING (What it does to your mouth?)

Smoking is an activity whose hazards and ill effects are far beyond imagination. The harmful effects of this addiction can be a never ending saga. It affects the whole biological system of the human body. The hard fact is that the damages once done are hard to be restored and in most of cases it is usually too late when a person realizes the extent of damage that has occurred .Momentary pleasures can really make you pay a big price for the lifetime.
Smoking and mouth are also closely related. The major effects are:
• Bad breath or preferably called as smoker’s breath.
• Stains of teeth.
• Gum infection and inflammation.
• Early loss of teeth.
• Above all oral cancers.
Smoking brings out a typical smell in mouth and the air the person breathes out. This is a typical tobacco smell called as smoker’s breath. This smell can be easily made out by any person talking or in contact with the smoker.
Smoking causes extrinsic tobacco stains on teeth. It affects both the facial as well as the lingual aspects of the teeth. At early stages these stains can be removed by ultrasonic scaling but later they also get deeply absorbed and are difficult to remove.
Gum damage caused by smoking is equally hazardous .It steals the pink soft look from the gums and turns them hard and pale. It also affects gums and tooth attachment causing early mobility and tooth lose.
The greatest damage that smoking causes is oral cancer .It is completely corresponding to the level of smoking. The greater the intake the greater is the risk. They usually appear as a small white patch which is usually not painful in the early stage. Later on it becomes intense and difficult to cure.
Dental treatment in smokers is equally risky. The major risks that is associated:
• Delayed or compromised post operative healing.
• Failure of prosthesis and restoration.
• Loss of dental implants.
The hard truth is that the earlier you quit smoking, earlier you will be relieved of all the associated risks. Proper medical intervention and counseling can really help to quit smoking. This is not easy for sure but a strong willpower to lead a healthy life can really create wonders.
