E.M. Foster’s novel A Passage to India is a famous novel in England and out of England. Foster went in the Subcontinent to visit after the Second World War when India was not in a peaceful condition. There were different kinds of problems there keeping in mind those entire problem Foster wrote this novel at the time when the Angle-Indians were ruling the Subcontinent. In the novel the theme of separation dominates the whole novel.
As the novel shows that the Indians’ and the English men’s separation, the Hindus’ and the Muslims’ separation, separation between Roney and Adela and Mrs. Moore, separation between Dr. Aziz and Mrs., Moore and the separation between man and nature are more prominent.
The major cause of separation is political and social background that creates a wide gulf between the Indians and Anglo-Indians. The second major cause of separation is language and culture. The Indian culture is different from the Muslim culture but the English culture is entirely different than the Hindus’ and the Muslims’ culture.
Fielding is abroad minded but in spite of this there is a great difference between the two thoughts. Fielding liked Imperialism and Dr. Aziz liked Mughal rule in the Subcontinent.
In the broader sense, the novel shows a wide view of two cultures with different heritage and history and both failed to understand each other living together due to Eastern and Western thinking. The opening of the novel is sensational due to dividing the town of Chanraore into two parts; the English Civil Station and the Native civil Station. The English Civil Station did not help the Native Civil Station in plight. The Indians knew that the British wanted to be slave the whole Indian and Indians. There will be no unity between the English and the Indian in future
On the other hand Bridge Part creates a wide gulf between the Indians and the Anglo-Indians as we see in Mrs. & Mr. Turtun’s meeting most of the Muslim Indian ladies are invited and insulted knowingly by the Indians and Anglo-Indians. From here the Muslim ladies started hating the Anglo-Indian.
More than this, Mrs. Moore and Adela both failed to create harmony between the Indian and the Anglo-Indian while living together knowing this, the Hindus and the Muslims may gather at one platform due to religious difference.
They know that the Hindus and the Muslims want liberty from the British and the Afghans conquered India therefore the Muslims are superior to India and the British.
In the days of Moharam, the Muslims and the Indians quarreled on the Tazia while crossing a people tree that was main hindrance in the bazaar. On the other hand Bhattacharyya did not send his carriage to take Mrs. Moore and Adela and at this Dr. Aziz criticized the Hindus and their dirty homes.
Separation, Adela and Roney and Mrs. Moore and Dr. Aziz, is most prominent in the novel. Adela the engaged with Roney but after visiting India meeting with Dr. Aziz she changed her mind about Roney and chose Dr. Aziz her future husband because he was more handsome than Roney.
While visiting the Maraber Caves Adela asked Dr. Aziz about his wife and child listening to it he dropped her hand and at once entered the Caves and the Caves separated them, on the other hand Mrs. Moore separated from her son Roney entering the Caves because darkness was prevailing in the caves. Reaching in the Caves Adela released a cry due to the Caves horror but other considered it Dr. Aziz assaulted Adela in darkness.
Owing to Maraber Caves Dr. Aziz had to face court trial due to assaulting Adela in the Caves but he was declared innocence but Roney rejected it but Mrs. Moore supported dr. Aziz at this Roney ordered her mother to leave India at once and Mrs. Moore suicides before her son.
Here Pall Mallon says, “In the Passage to India’ there is a separation between man and nature, race from race, culture from culture, language from language and religion from religion, there are no chances of harmony between them.”
To sum up, it the best novel that exposes the causes of separation between the Hindus, the Muslims and the British when they were living together in India. Foster debunks the real facts which he had seen while visiting India with his physical eyes. He exposes real human nature in the novel of different races that could not combine living together closely. In achieving harmony the main hindrance was religion that was different from one another.

Didn't read the novel but watched the film adaptation. The cast did an outstanding job with their performances. If it were an event in my real life it would have been difficult not to become extremely angry. What happened to the accused man was so … so … it's difficult to think of a word. But I was glad that in the end, he obtained justice.
There's a common expression people use in America. It says: “Life is hard when (or if) you make hard.” I disagree. A lot of times your life is hard because somebody else is making it hard for you! You know it's not you making it hard because all you're doing is minding your own business! That's how I felt about Dr. Aziz. He wasn't do anything to anybody. Why bring all that hell on him? It was good movie! You posted a nice review / commentary.
I really do not know a lot about India culture and tradition but know some through their movies. When it comes to their history I rarely know little about it cos they are very far from Africa. But going through this post has made me know Indians are being separated into two. When I watch their movies, they speak English language but here in my country they say their English is not real that it is being worked for easier understanding for people across the country. I will always ask myself, does it mean that Indians don't and can't speak English language. Until now I still don't believe it. Am even surprise that the post mentioned earlier war on India. When I watch their movie, the least I expected from their movie is war. Love dominates everything but I think what they display in their movies is not the main thing that's happening in the country. Wellshall I can't say everything that happens in a country through their movies.
But until now I still wish to know how many religions that exist in India because the kind of prayer and the kind of status I see in their movies, I wonder.
