Our Visit to the Grand Haven Lighthouses

We visited the Grand Haven lighthouses in Michigan many years ago, and I remember when we first stepped out of the car, my husband said “Oh, we can kill 2 birds with 1 stone here.” Like I dragged him out of the house, and made him go on this lighthouse adventure with me.

This was so cool to be able to see two lighthouses at the same place. These lighthouses sat at a state park. The lighthouse closer to the land was called the South Pierhead Inner Light, which was the conical shaped one. The one that was further out on the pier was called the South Pierhead Entrance Light, because it was the first lighthouse of the two, that mariners seen where they were coming in from Lake Michigan to enter Grand River.

The lighthouse that was further out, reminded me of a hull of a ship. These lighthouse are obviously not the tallest lighthouses I’ve seen, but the way they stood apart from one another, is what made these so picturesque. They looked nothing alike, but this is what makes the pair so distinct from other lighthouses.

The inner light is 36 ft. tall, and it use to be white in color, but that was before they decided to paint it red back in 1917. The South Pierhead (outer lighthouse), also stands 36 ft. tall.

These two lighthouses have to withstand some very harsh winter weather, with freezing temperatures, and they’re probably one of the top set of lighthouses for photographers. People have captured their beauty with icicles dangling several feet from the top of the towers. This location during the winter months is definitely a photographers dream.

We enjoyed our visit here, and this is where we decided to eat our lunch that day. They were just another adventure in my lighthouse trip that I took, shortly before we moved here to Florida.
