ORGANIC CLOTHING AS AN ENVIRONMENT FRIENDLY CHOICE

When shopping for a new pair of pants or a t-shirt, you probably don’t wonder about the fabrics used to make them. Well, it’s probably time to do so because your clothes and what’s in them- could have a negative impact on the environment.

That’s what could happen if you wear nonorganic clothing. Garments are considered nonorganic if they come from synthetic or man-made fabrics such as nylon, rayon, polyester, and acrylic. Meanwhile, apparel made of fabrics such as cotton, silk, abaca, and the like, are considered organic because they come from natural, plant-based sources. This makes nonorganic clothing less environment-friendly choice.

Nonorganic clothing or fabric also increases the pollution since it uses fertilizers, pesticides, and other harmful chemicals that affect the soil and water systems for its plant-based materials. For example, rayon, an artificial fabric used for jackets, suits, and ties, uses toxic chemicals such as sulfuric acid to treat its source, the wood pulp. Converting fibers into clothes, a process that includes dyeing and bleaching also uses toxic substances that remain in the clothes long after the manufacturing process.

Aside from contributing to pollution, nonorganic clothing also takes up more energy. Despite being quick-drying and resistant to stretching, polyester fabric, commonly used in sportswear, requires a large amount of water as well as of crude oil.

And unlike organic clothing, nonorganic clothing doesn’t maintain ecological biodiversity. For example, bamboo, whose fiber has a wide range of uses, from underwear to bedsheets, doesn’t need to be replanted after being harvested, therefore causing zero damage to the soil. And in countries that grow a cotton plant, the source of the most widely used fabric in the world, farmers use a method called crop rotation, the planting of crops in different seasons in the same soil to make sure it remains fertile and to protect it from insects.

The best thing to keep in mind before pulling something off the rack in your next shopping adventure is that your clothes do not simply protect you from the elements or say something about your personality or your fashion sense. Now more than ever, your clothing choices show how much you care for the environment and the people who inhabit it.

    • One problem arising out of the use of organic clothing involves in their maintenance. They need regular and prompt washing and proper ironing. Otherwise, they look very shabby. Even silk also can be worn at the most for a day or two but not more than that.
But, the non-organic clothing needs less attention as far as their maintenance is concerned.
The organing clothing like linen, silk, cotton, Handloom etc., no doubt richly contribute to the environmental protection. They also protect the body from excess heat and excess cold.

    • ABSOLUTELY YO HAVE THE POINT THERE SIR. I ALSO ADD THAT WHEN IT COMES TO PRACTICALITY, THE NON-ORGANIC CLOTHING IS MORE CHEAPER AND AFFORDABLE COMPARED TO THE ORGANIC CLOTHINGS.
HOWEVER, IF ONE DOESN'T HAVE ANY PROBLEM WITH FINANCIAL, IT IS BETTER THAN GOOD TO GO WITH ORGANIC CLOTHES.

    • Regardless of whether one is concerned or not about this planet and its environment, there are countless benefits to wearing organic clothing. It’s likely the majority of individuals who wear organic clothing, aren’t even aware of it. The one’s who do wear sustainable clothing, are aware, and are consciously making the effort to better the planet with their actions. Hopefully by the end of this article you’ll be inspired to consciously choose your outfit material, and want to rework your entire wardrobe with organic clothing.

Throughout history, companies continually discover innovative ways of making clothing out of new materials and fabrics. With Eco-Fashion coming into mainstream, designers have become more original and are coming out with superb ideas and cool designs made out of organic clothing. The apparel industry has been showcasing a plethora of fashionable garments that the wearer is excited to try.

    • When it comes too organic clothing, the most popular materials include cotton, hemp, soy, bamboo, silk, and wool. As you might already know, cotton is the much-preferred fabric throughout the world, and is versatile in the manufacturing of different types of clothes. However, conventional cotton farming is hazardous, as it needs nearly 10% of the world’s pesticide supply and about 25% of insecticide reserves. That being said, cotton farmers must now adhere to strict guidelines prohibiting pesticides and chemical fertilizers. With this process, organic cotton offers one of the most soft, breathable and luxurious clothing to the wearer’s skin, especially for infants.

Hemp, another material used in the manufacture of quality organic garments, requires no herbicides for its cultivation as it has natural resistance to pests, fungus and insects. A pound of hemp fiber uses a fraction of the water needed to grow a pound of cotton, which is naturally resistant to most pests and diseases. When compared to cotton, hemp can offer 8 times the tensile strength and 4 times the durability.
