The Mysterious Palace of Kublai Khan

Everybody sees dream but what is dream nothing but a reality and nothing else; but people do not believe in dream considering it a mere fantasy and nothing else. In reality dream are real and our life on earth is pure dream and an illusion and away from reality. But to believe in it a very difficult thing that dream are real and life is nothing.

Joseph saw a dream while when he was in the prison and later the dream proved true and just like that other prophets saw dream and all proved true late. But believing in dream is very difficult for those who are lack of true knowledge and such persons are away from reality of life. It is said that when we slumber God speaks us with number means God talks to men in dream not in real life.

Yes, in real life God just talks to the Prophets as God talked to Moses on the Mountain of Sinai. God talked to The Holy Prophet Muhammad (May Peace be Upon Him) through Gabriel…God talked to King Solomon in Dream before awarding King Solomon Prophet hood.

Just like Kublai Khan saw a dream the King of China, his dream was very mysterious for the whole world. He saw a dream in which he saw a palace very vast 25 miles long and wide fill of wilderness and wild flowers and tree just an enchanting place for the visitors ancient and modern, a river going meandering underground ten miles measureless for men and for the coming generation. Awaking from the dream he ordered to build a palace that he has seen in his dream.

I read this beautiful dream poem when I was the student of Bachelor of Arts and I liked the poem with my whole heart due to be dreamy poem. It is a very long poem but beautiful and full of mild supernatural atmosphere, free of horror and harmful elements.

  1. T. Coleridge’s poem Kublai Khan is the most widely known a dream poem. While reading the book Purchase Pilgrimage he slept for three hours. On awaking he prepared himself to write down on a paper the dreamed lines. When he was writing the lines somebody knocked at the door to see him. Talking one hour with the guest he forgot all the lines seen in the dream.

According to the poet, Kublai Khan ordered his masons to build a palace of ten miles in Xandu, surrounded by bright castles, sweet smell bearing gardens, nice tall trees, dangerous hills, and a sacred serpentine river flowing beautifully from the palace. Therefore the poet exclaimed in these words:

“And there were gardens bright with sinuous rills,

A here were forests ancients as the hills,

It flung up momently the sacred river,

Five miles meandering with a mazy motion,”

The River Alp’s going and coming be mysterious for the local and foreign travelers and visitors but the mysterious thing in the castle was the mysterious cave was surrounded by tall cedar trees seemed to be an ancient forest fit for the crest-fallen women who come to lament their failing lucks.

Near the river its mighty cataract-jerk the covered area of the palace and its measurement is measureless to men. The river’s coming out of the mysterious cave must cross small woods and caves must join the deep dark sea in the end. When the sun appears its rays must touch the earth and on the other hand its shadow must float in the center of the river like a glacier. Therefore the poet exclaimed in these words:

“The shadow of the dome of pleasure,

Floated midway on the waves,”

According to the poet, Kublai Khan heard from the handmade castle the voices of his ancestors prophesying war which later proved true. Therefore the poet exclaimed in these words:

“And amid this tumult Kublai heard from far,

Ancestral voices prophesying war,”

At the end of the poem, the poet bewailed over his friend’s arrival that disturbed his composed mind and thus he forgot his whole dream poem. The poet says that if he succeeded in recalling the song sung by an Abyssinian maid in the castle he could be able to compose the whole forgotten poem.

To sum up, it is a dream poem. Its diction, thought and imagery is beautiful for human senses, clear and understandable for the readers. There is also a supernatural touch in the poem without harmful elements. It is written in the blank verse.

    • When I first heard the words “Kublai Khan” … just hearing them without knowing anything else, it evoked a magical or a dream-like place in my mind. I just figured it had to be the name of a faraway place. Of course, it's a real person in history. But even now when I see or hear the words, it still conjures up images in my mind of a mystical place.
