I have always wondered why our trains in India are so bad in every way. To get into any train one needs to climb and this is not easy for long distance travel as one has to bother about luggage as well. And there are those toilets which are never clean; the food is hopeless and so on. If one travels by the ordinary class there will be those fans that do not work. In a nutshell travelling by trains in India is a nightmare. With strides in all directions surely something could be done to make travel by trains a pleasure as well but sadly nothing is visible on the horizon.
I had a boss who was posted in the USA and his wife mentioned to me about how straight the California coastline was and that the railway line ran parallel to the coastline, From then on I was dreaming of experiencing that travel and what better way than choosing a line that would guarantee comfort. – Amtrak.
After my package tour of the US I continued to stay back to meet family and friends. And at this time I planned to take this train to meet my nephew in Oxnard. One friend came along with me. The travel was just as I had imagined. The sea coast kept us company right through.
The Amtrak train had all the comforts one would want. It was a two storied train and we chose the upstairs. There was a canteen with great food. There was an attendant on the train who would take care of whatever our needs would be.
The train however did not get to Oxnard and we had to get off at Santa Barbara and take a bus that was awaiting us. That too was a memorable experience going through the city and to see my nephew meeting us at the bus stop to take us to his home.

Never been to India. But I watch a lot of travel shows on TV. The way you described the train ride is exactly what I saw on a television show. You are so right! It's nothing like riding a train in America! Which is really too bad. Because I'm sure looking out of a train window would be a great way to see the beauty of India.
Amtrak trains are so homely with all facilities. There was a guy who kept coming to us asking us if we needed any help. The canteen was great too.
One of my brothers used to work for Amtrak. I think they treat their employees and passengers pretty good! :)
In comparison to what we have in India Amtrak is heaven
