Making Red lantern via red envelope

The Chinese New Year is just around the corner, the Chinese is going to celebrate the Chinese New Year, i.e the first day of the first month of the new Lunar Year on  28th, January 2017.

For a new year, we love to have everything in new and  red. Red bring the meaning of happiness, prosperous, wealthy, all the good things. Thus, we love to decorate our house with something red, red lantern is one of it.

We can get a lantern sold in the supermarket or bookstore nowadays easily, but we can make it ourselves at home via those unused or new red envelope too. We call the red envelope : “Ang Pao”  here in Hock Kian dialet,  meant the same, i.e red evelope.

To make the red lantern, we can get the red envelope at the supermarket and bookstore during the  Chinese New Year period.

ONLINE TUTORIAL AT YOUTUBE:

I just find a video at Youtube  to get an online tutorial on how to make a simple red lantern. This simple lantern would need about 15 minutes to get it done. Here is the link for those whom like to give a try too:

Making the red lantern by ourselves not only can save the cost but can be a good activity for the kids too, to get them out of the mountains of  homework. This could be a good and quality bonding time between the kids and me too. The kids will feel the happiness of the preparation of Chinese New Year when helping in making the lantern.

The process is full of fun when the kids try to learn something new, see in the picture, we supposed to make the lantern, but the kids cut the envelope in the other way, thus we made it into a red sweeper for instead! Isn’t it fun?

The picture is mine.

    • When I was a kid, making lanterns was a totally fun activity! But we only made lanterns around Halloween time. Didn't know anything about Chinese New Year. Now that I know about the holiday, I no longer make lanterns. Unlike Peter Pan I grew up. :) But I must say the lantern pictured in the video is gorgeous! It's much fancier than the ones I used to make when I was a kid.

      • hi Treathy, looking forward to read more on your type of lanterns. We enjoy making it during Chinese New Year and Moon cake Festival which about mid autumn season.
