Landslides In The Rural Village

The mayor of remote and little town of San Emilio makes another ocular inspection to a village where a landslide happens. The incident isolated three villages in their town last year because the cemented road collapsed from the side of the mountains down to below.

The villagers need to cliff the side of the hills and need to walk on feet on more than kilometer of distance just to pass through the eroded area. The worst part is when the soil gets mud because of the rain.

The danger is always there. It’s not easy to walk through the side of the slippery mountain, sometimes you hold a child or the things you need to pass through to the other side. Then you feel tired because of long walking. Getting dirty because of mud and twigs is not always escapable.

The soils loosen up because of non-stop rain brought by the southwest monsoon. The soil gets weak of its hold until it eroded. The cemented road which is just constructed a year ago was also destroyed. Houses nearby were affected and the families were relocated. There is speculation that beneath the soil is a formed cave when the water flows down.

But the damaged has been done and the only thing that can be blame is nature. No more transportations of any kind of vehicles because the road is unpassable. The wise thing to do is to find another route for a new road opening and construction. The practical and immediate solution is to make a path for the people.

The years of waiting for the roads to open up the possibility of the place and for the development of the rural village was all gone in an instant moment? It will take another five more years to complete the road project.

But many things have been proven to Filipino; soil might erode but not the aspirations and ambitions, landslides may happen to a place but never to a dream to good living.
