Kyteler's Inn
We went to an impromptu family vacation for the May bank holiday this year because my husband is going out of town for their company’s conference. The conference was scheduled to run Thursday the whole day and half day on Friday. So we decided to arrive early on Wednesday evening and check out on Saturday lunch time. We decided to book a couple of nights in Kilkenny since we haven’t been there and thought, it would be a nice way to go around and explore what the place has to offer. So I decided to file for a couple of days off from work since there’s no way I can juggle working and minding over my son at the same time.
The hotel we stayed in was actually nice and during the day, my son and I explored the surrounding area of the hotel and the facilities. My son particularly loved the play area in the hotel since they have toys he hasn’t seen before (ball swim!). So even if my husband was busy with his conference during the day, we weren’t bored! We just enjoyed the hotel’s facilities while we can.
On the last day of the conference, my husband finished around midday and we decided to have a stroll around the city center, which was about 15-20 minutes away from our hotel if we take the taxi. It was the only chance we have since we are checking out midday the next day. We also decided to have dinner after walking around and letting our little one have a little bit of fun on the kiddie playground beside the Kilkenny Castle. We saw a couple of pubs and restaurants but decided to have dinner at the pub in Kyteler’s Inn. On the outside, it looked like a mini barn but the interior proved to be a lot more interesting. The decoration was like an old Church and medieval town hall all rolled into one. My husband even commented that the decoration resembles something you can see in Game of Thrones, LOL!

I was not too hungry so I decided to order a small portion of Irish Guinness stew. The staff was friendly and he even said hi to my little one.
Guinness Pie
My food arrived promptly and it reminded me of a bowl of home cooked Guinness stew. The meat was soft and tender and the portion was quite big – I was thankful I only ordered small! My food was also piping hot. So even if the stew was only reheated, it definitely warmed up my stomach!
The place even got better when some local musicians played the violin and guitar – Irish-music style. I haven’t been to a pub where Irish music was played so this is definitely something for me to remember. It reminded me of the times when I went out and attended band gigs before my son was born.
It was truly a nice experience to cap off my Kilkenny experience. I look forward to coming back there again sometime!

I have always wanted to visit Ireland. I love Guinness but have not ever had the stew. I bet it was really good. Great post.
Ah, my husband says that Guinness tastes differently from overseas in comparison if he drinks it here. When I used to live in Melbourne, he went there and visited me and bought a pint of Guinness. He said it tasted "odd" so hopefully you can visit Ireland to compare the taste? :) Using the beer in the stew made the sauce richer and darker - probably because the beer was a stout so there is more depth in flavour.

Thanks for appreciating. Yeah, I actually found Kilkenny (in general) a lot nicer and people are more polite than here in Dublin. It's true, first impression makes a lasting image so it is really good to put your best foot forward especially when you are in businesses like this.
Yes, you enjoy the place that we have not seen still but you are lucky went there with family to wining and dining in the sunset and sunrise a wonderful trip.
Kytelers Inn is in the heart of Kilkenny’s cathedral city and this family business has been run by Nicola Flynn and her team for the past 25 years. The building is steeped in history and full of stories that date back to 1324, when Dame Alice le Kyteler was branded a witch and sentenced to death. Apparently between making the Inn a den of merrymaking, she saw off four husbands, and then proceeded to escape her death sentence.
The evening you I think as visited you were seated on the ground floor beside a massive open fireplace, with a roaring fire which was perfect on the miserable evening. The menu was short and precise and everything served is prepared freshly and all ingredients are sourced locally. Children have their own section of the menu or have the option of half portions on the main menu.
