It could have been worse

We went to a shopping mall for lunch today. As usual, my children always like to go to the book store and read some books there. I read a picture book to them, and there was a story called “It could have been worse”.

A mouse came home from a visit to his town cousin, and on his journey home, he had several “unlucky” moments. He fell down from the tree, he fell into a hole, he fell into the river, and he sat on a thistle and got the thorns on his fur. He thought it was really a terrible day for him. When he was having all those terrible moments, he was actually saved from being eaten by a cat, a bird, a big fish, a snake and also a fox. He was indeed a very lucky mouse, though he might not know at the moment. He told his mom about his unlucky moments, and his mom just told him “Never mind, it could have been worse.”

My children enjoyed this story, and they just kept laughing when I told them the story. I think it’s a good story to tell them. It reminds us to be grateful for every moment. We might think we are in a bad situation now, perhaps it could have been worse, and perhaps we are actually saved from a worse situation. I believe everything happened for a reason, so when something happened to us, there might be a good lesson for us to learn, or it might actually a rescue for us. We might feel sad or angry, we might blame others or ourselves, but it’s better if we can calm down ourselves, and still be grateful for what has happened to us. Though I might not say like the mama mouse “It could have been worse”, as I do not want to think I am actually in a bad situation now, I will just be grateful for it.

I am having a quite serious stomach pain now, it’s too painful that I can’t even sleep. I am glad I am not blaming myself or feeling bad, but still be grateful, at least I know my baby is still well now. Perhaps it’s a good reminder for me not to eat outside food when I am pregnant. Though I am feeling the pain, it might make me worse if I keep complaining or blaming, but if I can just remind myself to be grateful, I feel the peace and I feel easy too. This actually makes me feel better.

I wrote a post about being thankful for waking up lately. We should thank the universe for having all these for us, including the “terrible or unlucky moments”, the pain, the sadness or all those negative incidents. These might be some good lessons for us, or these could have been worse. So, just be thankful for everything.

If you are interested in reading the picture book I mentioned, this is the link from GoodReads – It Could Have Been Worse. The author is A.H. Benjamin, and the book was illustrated by Tim Warnes.

Have you ever encountered such situation like the little lucky mouse in the story, which you thought you were having terrible moments, but indeed you were very lucky?

    • @kaka135 I hope that you realize your gift for translating real life into articles, and storybook readings into life lessons is a rare talent. I never know where your words will transport me, but it is always with anticipation that I click on the link to one of your posts!

Shared on my Twitter and featured on my FB author page - scheduled through Buffer, this time so we can see how well this app works :)

    • This article reminds me of my everyday life...so often I think my day is just awful and wonder if it can get any worse, but then I realize that I am darn lucky because life could have dealt me a much worse hand of cards. You bet I can certainly relate to your article. my pain is coping with a disabled spouse that tend to feel sorry for himself. I am sure that everyone can relate to your writings because life is not perfect, we just have to look for the good.

    • I remember what my teacher in the elementary had told us for we always complained every time we are given a task to do, an assignment to accomplish. She counseled through a humorous story of a certain boy like our age when we were in elementary studying. It was December and every boy is having their own gift. A certain boy was asking his father to buy him new shoes. He kept on insisting on having one. An old man happened to pass by and talked to the boy. The man pointed to a crippled boy. "Have you notice that boy? He is very quite. He never complains about having no feet. But you are so lucky that you have complete feet, but you keep on complaining to have new shoes." The boy was silent so as with his father.

    • To your question, yes. My family recently went through a terrible situation. To where we found how lucky we were when the FBI and cops showed up to arrested 2 roommates.

    • Most of the children like picture book since childhood because these are the best for learning purpose for the children. Its main reason is that children store pictures very soon in their minds with the hep of picture books.

Picture books may give these benefits to children as:
The illustrations of a picture book help children understand what they are reading and allow young readers to analyze the story. When children are having difficulty, the illustrations can help them figure out the meaning of what they are reading. The illustrations are also a powerful way to help English learners comprehend the story.

Children love art. Why do you think they spend so much time coloring, drawing and doing crafts? Whatever the reason children are drawn towards a book, it’s a means to get them to read.

Language: Picture books allow children to practice the sounds of language and as parents it’s our responsibility to introduce new and interesting words at every opportunity. The rhythm and rhyme in many picture books make for great read-alouds and children learn words more easily when they hear them spoken often.

Repetition: The repetition in many picture books allows a child to participate in the story. Young readers get excited when they can anticipate a forthcoming line and children learn skills like phonemic awareness, phonics, comprehension and fluency.

Picture books are multi-sensory, which aids a child’s growing mind and stimulates their imagination. Not only do the children hear the story, they see the illustrations, and smell and touch the pages.

Picture books can be a useful tool for teaching the concept of cause and effect. Before reading a picture book to your children, tell them to listen for key words such as because, so, if, then, as a result of, etc. These types of words can usually be found in a story

Picture books help develop story sense. Children learn the beginning, middle and end of a story and can often relate to the age-appropriate issues and conflicts presented in a picture book.

Picture books allow an entirely different, more interactive communication between parent and child. Picture books allow parents to spend time talking with their children about the story, pictures and words. This interaction builds reading comprehension. Picture books allow you to talk about what you see on each page, so be sure to talk about what happened in the story, ask about the characters, how they are feeling, and events that took place.

Picture books are fun and the key is to always make the reading experience fun and a time to look forward to. Reading should never be perceived as a chore. If you make reading a chore early on in a child’s development, they might grow to resent reading. Children who don’t naturally progress from picture books to chapter books may translate reading into working – more specifically, working that isn’t much fun.

It’s unfortunate that parents are pushing their kids past picture books, just as some turn up their noses at graphic novels and magazines. It’s important to encourage your kids to get their hands on everything they can, including picture books, comics, and even kid-friendly websites. It doesn’t matter what they read as long as they read and children who learn to love books will be children who grow up to be good readers.
