How to stopping the children from sticking to T.V

Most of the parent know we should not let the children stay in front of the T.V for long hour or glued to T.V. Having said that, how to  stop  a T.V addiction or get the children away from the T.V is a big challenge nowadays.

Here are the tips:

  1. Have no T.V at home. This is the most effective and straight way to stopping the children from watching T.V as their pass time and become a T.V potato without enough exercise during the day.

With no T.V at home, the attraction of the children will divert into other areas, like playing games, toys, gardening, cycling instead of sitting at one place for hours long.

  1. Discuss with the children and let them know not all the program of T.V are suits them, thus they have to be selective and only stick to T.V for certain programs only but not the whole day.
  2. Set a schedule. Discuss with the children and set a schedule on what time can they watch T.V, take for example, the Cartoon programs, 5.pm to 6.30 p.m before dinner everyday, provided they have finished all the homework before that time.

If not, will not allowed to switch on the T.V.

This strategy can kill two birds with one stone, so the parent can urge the children finish their homework without any delay.

If the children break their words, there will be some punishment, say not allowed to watch T.V for one week or wash the toilets for a week.

Then, the children will know parent’s word is word, have to fulfill the terms and conditions for watching the T.V

  1. Bring the children away from the T.V and bring them along with you to do something more productive or healthier, like reading books, do some house cores, flying a kite, etc.

First but not least, the parent themselves should not stick to T.V while scolding the children not to watch the T.V. The children will feel not fair to them if they are not allowed to do so. So to be fair, the parents should set an good example and watch T.V for few hours or limit to weekend with the children.

    • I do not have any kids, but when I do - restricting from television, electronic devices will be a must until they're a little older. And with reward, or completion they will get some time for that. :)

    • That is true. Since the parents should be the models to their children, they shouldn't be watching TV too, but instead be with the children to teach and guide them in their homework.

They should see to it that they will study their lessons. Allow them to watch TV only on Saturdays. Sunday morning and afternoon, they can also be allowed. However in the evening no more. They have to prepare their school bags and do their homework.

Better still on Friday night, they should do their homeworks, so by Sunday night they can just study.

    • @Dina is right, we only allowed to watch the T.V after finishing our homework or even during Friday night and weekend is better.
My kids only able to watch T.V when they are at their granny's house, we have no T.V at home, but computer is another kind of T.V too nowadays.

My kids love to watch the Youtube or some videos clips at the social media too, but always restricted by us.

And, we always mention the computer is belong to me, not them, so they can simply manipulate it or doing something on it. They do alert on this.

We allocate 2 hours cartoon watching time every week for them to watch some cartoon at Youtube.

We allocate 2 hours cartoon watching time every week for them to watch some cartoon at Youtube. They are looking forward to this section every week and have to finish all the homework first.

And, they have ice cream section on Monday but provided have a nail cut first. This help us to set up a life rhythm of the kids, so they won’t have much argument when we urge them to do something as per scheduled.

      • My sister allows her son whose 3 to use their tablet and puts a timer (usually 10 minutes) and he watches educational shows. They have restriction on just encase he accidentally clicks something else which is convenient.

    • I can still remember during my childhood years.I am so addicted to watching in a black and white TV. Luckily, I have my parents who controlled the time of watching my favorite TV programs. My parents are so lucky for having me and my other siblings. They didn't have any problems in our studies.

If I have my own child, I will also set some limitations in watching TV. It is not healthy for the child to be always hanging around the living room and watch TV. I think the trend had changed and some of the kiddies are addicted to modern gadgets. The same principle, it applies of what you had mentioned.
