Foods That Give the Christmas Feel

There are some food items that are only made during the Christmas season. Each country and even each State sometimes have their own delicacies. The aroma that fills the house while making these goodies truly brings in the Christmas feel.

All the members of the family pitch in with Christmas Carols as background music. In other words making Christmas sweets brings the family together in a spirit of love and happiness. Lending a hand is necessary as the quantity one makes cannot be handled by just one or two. The sweets are normally distributed among neighbours and also offered when visitors arrive with their wishes.
Our household had our own specialities and here is one such. We have added a few non traditional sweets as well. The whole world is at our disposal – thanks to the Internet – which has exposed us to what goes on in other countries during this festive season.

 

Kulkuls
Ingredients

2 cups maida
1 egg
2 cups sugar
Salt to taste
Water
oil

Method

Beat the egg and knead the flour in the beaten egg adding sufficient water. The flour should be kneaded to chapatti consistency The dough should be covered with a damp cloth to retain the moisture in the dough.
Use a comb and press a little of the kneaded flour and roll it. The impressions of the comb should appear on the dough. Close both sides tight so that they do not open while frying

Deep fry the kulkuls. Cool them.

Make a three string syrup and and roll the kulkuls in it. To get quick results the ratio of water to sugar should be 1:1 while preparing the syrup.
To give a festive feel the dough can also be coloured.
Store the kulkuls in an airtight tin.

They remain fresh for months. Not that they remain. There is heavy demand for this delicacy.
These days when maida is considered bad for health attempts are made to make kulkuls with wheat flour. They may not be as tasty but they could be successfully made using wheat flour.
