I came to realized these things when I had my first day at work. I able to pinpoint the lists of things that a person should do on the first day at work when I was in my table, not doing anything because the orientation has a schedule and distance of time was too far. Good thing I have my notebook and pen with me. I took advantage of my long free time to composed this blog that I want to share with you.

Every new employee of the company has different experience on their first day at work. Find below lists that a new employee should do to survive their first day.
Prepare to Feel Awkward
It is normal to feel awkward because you are fairly new in the company, you do not know any one. The HR personnel will able to introduce you to the employees and members of the management but for sure you cannot make friends that easy. You need to observe your environment as workplace has different kinds of environments. There are departments that the people are always busy, always talking to phone and walking in and out of the office. There are parts that are focusing at their computers and working alone. The best way is to observe first and making friends will happen in the right time. It is normal to feel awkward since you only know their names. You do not have to know everything on the first day in the first place. Also, whatever you experience on the first day is not the same case that will happen on the second day. Hope your first impression will not change your mind about your new company.
Presence of Mind
Since the first day of work consists of introduction and orientation, you need to grasp information as much as possible. The HR personnel will discuss the history of the company, the members of the management, the policies and rules, how the job is done, what is the product or service, what is the mission and vision etc. You need to take down notes. You need to prepare yourself to know the company as a whole. Not only learning about the company, but also analyzing yourself on how you will able to adjust yourself in your new environment. You need to be aware of the changes and get rid of the life before on your previous company. Much better if you will not compare them. Be alert, always listen and take down notes.
Making Friends
On the first day of work, for sure your first friends on your new company will be the newly hired personnel that are sharing the first day of work with you. Make friends with them. Get to know them by asking their name and their previous experiences. Make a good impression and good conversation with them. It is boring if you will just be timid and sit there. You throat only get dry if you will be shy enough to not to talk with someone. You can also start making friends with the employee of your new company, however, you need to understand that it will take time before the true friendship begins. Be open to possibility that not all of the people in the workplace will be nice to you. People are different in knowing other people. Give yourself a time to know them first.
Ready to Ask Questions
Since on the first day you will be experiencing a lot of company introduction and orientation, prepare to ask questions. HR personnel will able to appreciate if you ask questions because it gives them the impression that you are really interested with the company. Most of the questions are about Payroll like Salary and benefits or how the job is done. Make sure you ask them all during the orientation time so you will have an idea already.
Make a Good Impression
Making a good impression is not always being friendly. On a professional side, you must know that dressing appropriately, smiling, greeting people “good morning” or “good afternoon”, coming to work early, be always ready for everything, and having a positive attitude helps you to bring out a good impression. Even if you feel bored and sleepy because most of the time you are not doing anything, you must put a smile on your face and an eye contact to people. It leads them to thinking you are really interested and well prepared.
There are still points to consider but my list are those things that are must have of a newly employed personnel. I able to do it all. Second day is different from first day but one should maintain a positive attitude and an impression that you are always ready to learn new things and well prepared to start your job responsibilities. That is an ideal personnel a boss would want to have.

My teenager had just went for her first job, 4th day today.
She had the same opinion as you had mentioned.
She said that the first week is the "Honey moon" period, where you do those useless stuff, not your real job responsibilities.
Once you can handle them, her manager or supervisor will give her real tasks which happens to be today.
So, she is super excited and worried at the same time.
yes, your friends, new friends, you have to say Hi and Bye and smile until your lips cracked!
I don't usually make friends with chatterboxes. I totally hate this kind of personality. It affects my job. The first day at work gives an excitement for me. I am like a horse that never look in every direction. I work focused to finish the task than chatting with chatterboxes.
