Dental Care for Children: When to start brushing

Brushing of teeth should be introduced to children as early as possible. It is recommended that baby’s teeth need brushing as soon as they erupt.

Even a single tooth in the mouth is a signal to start cleaning. Initially a wet swab is good tool to start with the cleaning both for the gums as well as the teeth. This way the baby gets used to foreign objects in mouth and accepts brush easily.

16 to 18 months is a good time to start a regular brushing schedule. At this age the child is usually receptive and loves mimicking all that is around him.So he can try to imitate you and start using a tooth brush.

Importance of Brushing:
1). Removal pf plaque that gets stuck on the teeth and the gums. Plaque is a sticky substance which if not removed leads to bacterial growth and henceforth dental diseases.
