Dangers on the Network: Trojans and Malware

In this article we will talk about two of the greatest threats that currently exist on the Internet: Trojans and malware. For those who do not know the meaning of these terms, here is the definition.

A Trojan horse is a computer program used in order to gain access to a remote computer system. A Trojan has two distinct parts called the client and the server.

Client: It is the program that the attacker uses to connect to the computer of the victim and access the data.

Server: The server is the computer program that infects the victim. It is usually an  dot exe file. Once executed on the target computer, it is at the mercy of the attacker.

Malware: The word ‘Malware’ is formed by the abbreviation of two words namely ‘malicious’ and ‘software’. As the name suggests, it is any type of malicious program. For example Trojans are considered as malware. But there are many more types of malware like spyware, keyloggers, viruses, worms etc.

What represent the trojan’s danger?

Trojans allow an attacker to access a computer and have full control over it. To begin with, someone who controls your PC via a Trojan can view all your passwords, they can see what you are typing at all times, they can open or close programs on your PC, they can extract the bank details from your computer, they can download your history of conversations or any file that you have on your computer like personal photos, jobs, and passwords.

As you will understand, the danger of the Trojans is brutal. But that is not all. On the Internet, there are mafias that trade with networks of infected computers, also known as zombie computers.

As per an entry in wikipedia, there were between 100 and 150 million zombie computers in the world in the year 2011 alone. Of course , now, as on date, the number may be much higher. Another fact is that a largest network of about thirteen million zombie computers were said to have been recovered in the year 2009.

For what purpose did the mafias want the zombie computers?

As I mentioned above, there is, of course illegal, purchase and sale of infected computers on the Internet. It is estimated that approximately 20% of computers are part of these networks of zombie computers (also known as botnets). It is a real plague. The question is what is the use for them to take zombie computers networks? They use them for many things, for example:

DDoS: Let us suppose a ‘hacker’ has control over one lakh computers infected by a trojan. Now, if this hacker wants to do an attack on a web, he just gives the order to attack those one lakh computers. Your IP address is hidden, and on zombie computers, they attack without stopping, causing a normal user unable to access the web, due to saturation of requests.

Zombie computers to hack: Another use that a zombie computer can have is to be used as a proxy, ie, use the IP of the computer for illegal activities without the owner being aware of it.

    • I read this post and think it was very good. When any post about the dangers of viruses or trojans or malware are provided to people it really helps keep them informed. I suggest that anyone who reads this consider buying an internet security program like Norton Security or McAfee. One good hint: don't open e-mail that is from an unknown source. It is better to delete suspicious email than risk being infected.

      My 2 cents.

    • This blog is well written and informative. I have an antivirus software which is live when I work on my pc and so takes care of invasions

    • I totally agree with this. We need to secure the software of ours. I can still remember that these viruses infested in my former workplace. The management doesn't bother to fix it. Thus, I didn't have second thoughts to file resignation.

    • @raaman/
      you sure are right!
My laptop is often hit my malware virus instead of trojan horses.
I had to use Malwarebytes to scan for them and quarantine these malware viruses.
I had tried Avira, Avast, Norton, didn't find any of them.
Internet Security cost more than the usual anti virus but it is worth it for 1 year warranty.
Shared this post at Twitter and FB for my friends.
      Thanks for sharing

    • Last May during Presidential election campaign period in Philippines, I was among those busy campaigning our presidential candidate DU30 ( He is now our new Phil President Duterte), then what happened? I cannot anymore opened my Facebook account. It said that it was attacked my Malware .Those videos and YouTube sent to me contained Malware Virus. I wrote Facebook, and they sent me a very strong anti Malware only matter of 2 seconds that virus gone. I was so happy after, but so careful after that.
