Craving a Salty Treat: Try Baking Salted Pecans

Pecans are a tasty snack, and are great source of protein and omega-6 fatty acids. For many people in the Southern United States they are also found around almost every corner. Once shelled these nuts can be eaten raw, or baked in a number of different deserts. Salted Pecans are a favorite for kids and adults. The kids can have lots of fun finding the nuts and then baking them with a parent or other adult.

Step 1: Harvest, husk and crack the pecans. If there are not any pecan trees in the areas they can be bought from a store. Pecans bought in stores can get expensive. As a tasty treat they’re well worth it, but if you’re the only one going to enjoy them it might be a good idea to make a smaller batch. You can cut the recipe in half to do this.

Step 2: Gather all the items needed for backing. The items include:

4 tbl spoons butter

1 lb of cracked pecans

Shallow backing pan

1 tbl spoon salt

Step 3: Preheat the oven to 300 degrees.

Step 4: Go ahead and melt the butter in the pan while waiting for the oven to heat up. Just drop the butter into the shallow pan and put it in the oven. Make sure to pull it out before the butter starts to sear.

Step 5: Mix the pecans in with the melted butter. Try to coat the pecans as evenly as possible.

Step 6: Bake the pecans for about 15 minutes.

Step 7: Pull the pecans out and sprinkle the salt evenly over the nuts. Mix them around a little to distribute the salt.

Step 8: Bake for a final 15 minutes and then pull from the oven to cool. Watch them carefully the last 5 minutes. As ovens differ they may be finished sooner. They shouldn’t blacken at all. This will make them hard.

Step 9: Eat and enjoy!

Tip:

To make baked sugar pecans simply replace the salt with sugar.
