The Boy 2016 Movie Review

I am not good in doing movie review as most of you knows, however, my hands are itchy to click the keyboard of my laptop and share this movie with you. The movie is called The Boy. This one was shown this year, 2016. It stars Laura Cohen as Greta and Rupert Evans as Malcolm. At first, I was not going to watch this one because I know I will only shock myself on some suspense part, but then since there is nothing to do, I decided to watch. I watched it on my Laptop and I used an earphone so obviously, whenever there is a suspense part I was really shaking with fear. I know this movie is a suspense, right from the start. I know there is something mysterious about it. I am not on the part that the boy is inside the porcelain doll, either. Okay, let me start my review.

There is this nanny called Greta, played by Laura Cohen. She was hired by the Heelshire family. At the beginning of the story, she already lost her shoes. The director is trying to make us assume, there is a ghost. I do not fall into that kind of trap, though. Then she finally met Brahms. I thought at first it was Graham, the biscuit, lol. Brahms is the name of the son of the Heelshire couple. From what it seems, the couple believed that the spirit of Brahms, the son, is inside the porcelain doll. Greta finds it weird to see the couple talking to the porcelain doll. Anyway, the porcelain doll doesn’t look scary to me. It looks like a regular porcelain doll, however, I am still not a fan of porcelain dolls so whenever this doll is focused on the camera, I looked the other way. I am not scared on the porcelain doll, but on the movement, the movie will try to trick me. Then and there, Greta was oriented by the Ms. Heelshire about Brahms. Mr. Heelshire gave additional information as well.

Then one day, the couple Heelshire needs to go somewhere. You know it’s freaky because the last word of Mrs. Heelshire on Greta while hugging her was “I’m sorry”. That scene made me scared because I know something bad will happen to Greta. At the first day, Greta and Brahms, the doll, did not have a friendly environment. There were instances that Greta lost her pink dress and necklace while she is taking a shower. She was trapped in the attic after she found that the stairs from it were down. She went up and the door to get down locked. While trying to get out she banged into something and fainted. She woke up it was already morning. There are lots of strange things happen after it that I do not wish to include, though.

So the question to answer, is there a spirit inside the porcelain doll? That is for you to find out.

Little by little, the mysteries were  unfolded. However, for me, the movie failed to make me understand why a certain part happen. The young boy Brahms was killed because he was trapped in a fire. Then there was a missing playmate called Emily. I wonder why the parents hide what they are hiding. The movie failed to include the reason why the need to hide something. Maybe it needs something like they hide something because Mr. and Mrs. Heelshire is a popular couple in the United Kingdom. One mistake or false information could ruin their reputation, something like that. I also want to know why they took suicide. Yes, the couple took suicide.

On the viewers note, I have to admit I got scared on some of the parts. On some parts, it was predictable. My favorite part was when Greta was hallucinating after finding out and assuming that the spirit of the young boy Brahms is inside the porcelain doll. I appreciate Laura Cohen’s acting on that part. It is really effective as I got stress while watching her almost losing her mind. I also love the transition because after hallucinating, she found a peanut butter and jelly sandwich was offered outside her bedroom door and she finally realizes she is not alone. She even comes out with a mother instinct kind of thing with Brahms and they became friends, somehow. Anyway, at the end, I finally realized every part is useful for every part.

If you ask me if this is a horror, thriller or suspense (like all are meant the same, lol), yes it is. You will enjoy every part, just stick to the character. However, this is not the kind of movie that I wish to watch again after finding out the truth. I assumed something else and it didn’t happen, but it is okay, I am not the director.

For ratings, I will give this 7. It is worth watching. It is worth scaring you.
