Thunder and lightning is a phenomenon we are all familiar with. These days, however, it has taken a different pattern in that just last night there was thunder, lightning and heavy rain, nonstop. My experience has always been that it is never as continuous as what happened last night. There was no respite.
In the good old days this happened only during the nights but now one never knows when it can happen. We are expected to put off all electric connections as, if they are on not only will the gadgets be destroyed even the house will catch on fire. There is never a day during the monsoon season that we do not read reports of havoc caused by thunder and lightning. We hear of stories that lightning never strikes twice in one place but last night it was pounding at the same place countless times.
Nature surely has taken on a new avatar which we human beings just cannot understand. Not only do we not understand it leaves behind total destruction as and when it fancies.
Whether it is our own doing or a change in the solar system no one is yet able to come out with any answers.
We experienced something totally different some time ago. We were inside the house and suddenly we got the smell as though there were fireworks but looking out we saw something like a ball hitting the ground with a big noise and then disappearing leaving behind that smell.
That I now understand is ball lightning which can burn up the area where it appeared before disappearing. It lasts a few seconds unlike the normal lightning which flashes for a second or two.
Sources have been successful in capturing this phenomena in a video clip.
Scientists have also succeeded in getting their first glimpse of this never before seen vision.

It must be awful to worry even about house fires when there is a lightning storm! Here we don't worry so much about such things anymore, although lightning has been known to damage some appliances and even computers that were plugged into surge protection.
Our bigger concern in this neck of the woods is when lightning touches off a forest fire. These can be deadly - as we have recently seen with the massive forest in Alberta. (It turns out that one was caused by a human, but many are started by nature...)
