Ad Block; A Sanity Protection App

There was a time that Ads were at the top, and scattered along a side, and at the bottom of an item.  They were unobtrusive.   The Ads didn’t disrupt the flow of the site, and were no more vulgar than those in a magazine or newspaper.

That was then…

To give you an image…

I watched television all my life.  I know that the show begins and runs a minute or two, then there is a commercial break.   I know that about 15 minutes in there are more commercials.   I know that if it is a 30 minute show there will be Ads at the end.. if it is an hour show there will be ads at the 45 minute period… and then just before the final scene.

I know this.  I know when to go to the bathroom, when to have a snack, and when I’ll have enough time to run outside and put something on the line or take it off.

Then one day I went to watch a late night talk show.

There was the opening music and then there was a commercial.   The show started again, and broke for another commercial.  I don’t know what happened after that as I shut the show off.

The fact is, once the commercials become too ’nuff, you are no longer interested in the show.  The ‘pain’ must not exceed the ‘pleasure’.

Once Websites became 75% Ad the viewers dropped.   People don’t want to see Ads.  One, fine, Two, no Problem, Three, you’re pushing it.  Four, NO MORE.

Simple.

As bad as it is to see a bag drowning in Ads, it is far worse to Not see a page because of  the Pop Ups.  I can’t think of anything more annoying, nay, offensive, then a Pop Up which blocks your view of the site, and demands your attention.

How dare it!

When I use Stumbleupon my finger is never far from the Stumble button.  I go to a site, there’s a pop-up, I stumble.  I don’t know what the site was about, I don’t care.

If I see a pop up I close the window.  I am not putting up with it.

I use an Adblock which gets rid of most of these annoying things.  It allows me to view the site.

Oh yes, I know all about the money from the ads.  Fine.  Money from the Advertisements is limited because I limit my view of Advertisements.   But does a 2 second view count?  For if I see too many Ads or pop ups, I leave.

So sites have to kind of figure out a balance.  A few ads here and there, no one would block them. Pop Ups? Forget it.  Everyone will block them.

If a site can promise… we will only have three/four ads on a page and no pop ups… okay… I’m sure most people will disable their Ad Blocks.
