A workaholic is like a drug addict

I am workaholic or in simple language addicted to work and the latest example is I worked overtime for a website and did not sign-out from there unless I completed my quota of $7 for the day and redeemed it. I know it’s not a good habit but you cannot tell this to someone who forgets everything else when he finds something worthwhile to work at.

It’s not for the first time that I worked for almost 4 hours to achieve my target despite my internet connection was playing hide and seek due to very foggy condition in my area. I remember the time when my senior manage had to send me home since I was working continuously for six months without taking any leave during my probation period.

Let me share a simple secret with you, probably a drug addict will give up his bad habit but a workaholic is a difficult person because he will not give up work easily even if he is forced to do so. My manager used to warn me about the possibilities of ‘burnout’ if I did not spend some time in leisurely activities. I think all companies see to it that their workforce is over-worked or gets proper time for his family.

Let me come to point, if a person who compulsively works excessively hard and long hours is always at the risk of burnout and companies do not want this to happen to their good workers therefore they see to it that their workers get a proper rest and come back fresh on every Monday. However, there is a brand new team of modern experts that has reasons to believe that certain people consider them as ‘human capital’ engaged in cashing themselves @24×7.

I feel I am one of them and there was nothing wrong if I succeeded in cashing out my efforts working 4 hours extra. It’s Monday and I am back to my job.

    • My ex husband is a workaholic. During the weekend his favourite saying was this: "It is boring. I have nothing to do." But during his work week, his favourite saying in the evening was: Boy did I work hard today. I am so tired". Go figure, I guess he was never satisfied. Sorry about this comment. I just wanted to rant. I agree with you though about working for long hours to get your payment. I wish I had your energy.

    • Workaholic is like a drug addict? I guess so because as observed to those people who are said to be workaholic, they as if cannot live the whole day without doing a multi task. They cannot be satisfied with only one task they do. So for others, they work 'till midnight and then they woke up again as early as 4am just to do their work.

They are addicted with work, and that is why you compared it with drug addicts. As we all know, drug addicts depends on drugs to satisfy their body need, so as with workaholics, they feel contentment in doing full load of works daily.

    • I am a workaholic person. It is a fact that I feel not at ease if not accomplished something.
I even wished to have more time in one day. But I have to slow down a bit and do things if time permits.I was trying to maximize all my resources especially my internet.

    • My husband was a workaholic, which never left much time for us as a couple and if I ever spoke to him about this he would become angry which caused arguments. I resented feeling forgotten by him then one day we finally was able to actually sit and talk about our feelings he had been married before me and his exwife died from cancer after her death he dealt with his grief thru work, he and I met and eventually married but he was by that so use to working all the time he couldn't see what he was doing to our marriage, after our talk he began to take days just for me and it helped our relationship greatly.
