Water conservation has reached a do or die situation. Apart from learning to save water any which way that in fact would be enough, if all individuals thought in that direction, but that is not happening. It is a crime to waste water but this crime goes unpunished. If the powers that be did something to catch the culprits situation could have been kept under control to some extent. But nabbing such culprits is not easy unless meters are installed and water rationed out which reports say has been introduced in some countries. Even builders could be given orders to lay pipes for the waste water to go to trees.
The mega role of an individual however cannot be under estimated. If everyone thought of channelizing their used water to trees, repaired leaking taps, closed the tap while brushing one’s teeth, used just enough water for bathing, used just enough water for washing cars, clothes and vessels there would have been no need to take desperate measures to invest in water harvesting.
Even banning sinking of bore wells could slightly improve the situation. Bore wells are the biggest culprits and builders indulge in these practices unabated.
What better time than the rainy season to think of water harvesting an approach that is essential for our survival. With more and more water resources dwindling it has become necessary to manually save water and to do this there are several ways of which here are two ways.
Pipes are connected and the water is stored in sumps at convenient locations.
This water can also be channelized to swimming pools
There are pits dug in compounds for water to percolate down rather than let it join the sea
The percolation helps build to replenish natural reservoirs which have almost dried up due to indiscriminate use of water.
Here in our State there are moves in this direction on a pretty large scale.
