New Zealand were embarrassed by Windies in ICC CWC 1999

In the 18th match of the ICC cricket world cup, New Zealand was against the West Indies team. This game was played on County Ground, Southampton, England on 24th May, 1999.

West Indies won the toss and opts to bowl first and this means that New Zealand will bat first and set a target for W I to chase later in the match.

This is how the new Zealand team and 11 were looking like: Stephen Fleming (c), Nathan Astle, Chris Cairns, Craig McMillan, Gavin Larsen, Chris Harris, Dion Nash, Adam Parore (wk), Roger Twose, Geoff Allott, Matt Horne

And West Indies team and 11 were looking like: Brian Lara (c), Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Courtney Walsh, Phil Simmons, Curtly Ambrose, Jimmy Adams, Stuart Williams, Sherwin Campbell, Ridley Jacobs (wk), Mervyn Dillon, Reon King.

 

New Zealand was off to a very horrible start as firstly they lost their both openers at the team score of 13 runs in 4.5 over’s and then three more wickets were down and team score was only 59 runs for 5 wickets in 25.1 over’s. New Zealand were bowled out for only 156 runs in 48.1 over’s with Craig M top scored for them with 32 runs in 78 balls and Chris Harris made 30 runs in 50 balls with 2 4’s at the strike rate of 60 runs in 100 balls.

 

West Indies were required to chase 157 runs in 50 over’s to win the game.

West Indies batted splendidly well and were able to chase this total of 156 runs in only 44.2 over’s by only losing 3 wickets and West Indian Wicket keeper batsman Ridley Jacobs top scored with 80 runs in 131 balls with 8 4’s and 1 six and strike rate of 61 runs in 100 balls and Skipper Brian lara added 36 runs in 54 balls with 3 4’s and 1 six at the good strike rate of 67 runs in 100 balls in low scoring game.

 

West Indies won the game by 7 wickets and with 34 balls still remaining.
