I have been religiously watching Master Chef India right from its inception. I like this programme and admire the participants who have come with grit and determination to handle any posers however difficult they might be. I have seen tears not only from kids but also from adults when they have ruined their dishes and having had to start from crash with time constraints.
I admire the judges too as they have been fair most of the time.
While the previous seasons involved many form the ‘common man’ as RK Laxman put it, the season 5 is different.
1. We do not see any Statewise sessions where participants were picked based on what they brought. Their dishes were tasted and the selection done.
2. At season 5 we already see selected participants.
3. They do not belong to the ‘common man’ category. Instead we see a VP from a multi national, a pilot, a restaurant owner, someone who has been imported all the way from the US, someone from the UK and so on – a conglomeration of bigwigs indeed.
4. While the common man is perhaps disappointed I see the positive side to this paradigm shift in that the revelation of cooking passion among those who hold high positions in the Corporate World needs to be recognised.
5. These topnotch executives forget that they are bigwigs and present themselves as students would in an examination hall.
6. The expressions on their faces while their dishes are being tasted before rating is done is worth capturing on one’s camera and retained there for keeps. Their humble acknowledgement when they are lauded is yet another scene worth watching.
7. At the start I did feel when the common man was totally neglected but this I now feel will encourage all those who shunned cooking thinking that it only belonged to cooks and maids or perhaps the frustrated wives.
8. Wonder there would be a paradigm shift in kitchens too after watching this show. .
9. The judges indeed have a tough time as they are dealing with those who have come there shedding their egos that could possibly emerge at unguarded moments.

We used to watch a lot of cooking shows when we had cable TV. We still watch a lot via the public television station but not as much as before. Checked and found some videos available on YouTube. Have to set aside a time to take a look. Thanks for mentioning. Love cooking shows! :)

I took this topic to write a Blog on because it has a different concept this time. The participants are those who are holding great positions and yet have a passion for cooking - something that will encourage others in similar positions. Cooking is mostly shunned by this category.
Good topic choice for a blog post. Actually I think I know of an American chef who was a lawyer who decided he wanted to bake! He didn't get his start through a competition or cooking show. He just decided he wanted to do it! His cakes were unbelievable! :)
Do you enjoy cooking or you just do it because you have no other go? I love cooking provided there is some help around to chop and clean. I love creating new recipes.
Do I enjoy cooking? That's a tricky question for me. There was once a time when my kids would tell you to make sure to come by our house for traditional holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas. Yeah! I put my best foot forward and must say my meals were pretty impressive. But now my husband has a health condition that requires me to change everything that I ever knew about cooking and create new recipes or modify my old recipes. Enjoy cooking these days? To be honest. Not so much. It's very stressful trying to get the meals right for his dietary purposes. But I'm learning how! Because I love my husband. :)
Challenges are great no matter where we come across them. You have cooking challenges. Go for them and enjoy when you see your beloved husband relishing what you have cooked for him.
Well! This one is no different than any other reality series but Leaving aside the cynicsm atleast it helped shaped a few careers and inspiring many more.
