Nighttime has brought the rain upon my fair town of Dickinson, Texas. All around our area of Southeast Texas, the rains have resulted in flash floods, rivers overflowing in record proportions, and the destruction of homes and lives.
While this is devastation is around us, and as I listen to the thunder rumbling outside my window, I have to take note that my hometown, quaint and dreary as it may be, is a safe haven for me and my family. We have resided here for almost the entirety of our lives, moving from one home to another. During al that time, I have only been affected by one flood and two minor hurricanes. Flooding was the worst, it almost cost me my life when rushing water almost knocked me into the rising creek water. My truck had stalled out in the rising water near a creek bridge as I was attempting to report to work.
Losses for Texans this year, due to weather related calamities, has been enormous. I give thanks for my good fortune having never been financially burdened as greatly as others. During the flood it seemed that my almost new Ford pickup might suffer damage, but it was not to be. All was well and it drove for a number of years afterward.
Dickinson has been a great little place, safely hidden away between Houston and Galveston. Seemingly nestled in a spot where the majority of bad weather simply does not reach. This might seem odd, believe it or not, when watching the ABC Doppler radar track of approaching storms, the storms usually split apart passing to either side of our area. Neighboring League City, however, does get pummelled by the storms as does Texas City, Alvin, Friendswood and Clear Lake.
Call it good fortune, just blind luck or the providence of a well meaning God, one thing is certain. Dickinson is probably the safest town in the Gulf Coast region when it comes to bad weather.

It's also a town that's not publicized very much. Heard of Houston. Heard of Galveston. This is my first time hearing of Dickinson. You're right. I especially have never heard this city mentioned on weather reports.
