Bullying By School Staff

At age 12, I started having panic attacks. I was referred to the school counselor and she began meeting with me once a week or so to talk. I liked her a lot at first as she really was the first adult in a long time who was kind to me. I was being terribly verbally and emotionally abused at home by my mother at that point in time and the move to a bigger, rougher school had pushed me over the edge. It was just too much to handle. Shortly after the panic attacks began, the depression set in.

Over the next two years, the counselor continued to meet with me but our meetings became less and less helpful. I began to reveal both past abuse and current abuse I was experiencing – hoping that the counselor would offer me help but she never did. I became depressed to the point I was suicidal. By 8th grade she seemed openly hostile to me and even once told my mom I was again suicidal when I wasn’t! I didn’t know it then but her behavior was escalating into becoming an abuser herself.

Things culminated when I asked her to switch one of my classes because I was being bullied so much I couldn’t learn or focus. She refused and began to scream at me. She actually pushed me out of her office so hard that I fell backwards and hit my head on a table. She told me I couldn’t tell anyone or I’d be the one in trouble. Since I was used to being abused – I continued to speak to her until I graduated 8th grade.

Now as an adult, I have contacted the school district (she still works there) about her and have been assured that she’s been spoken to about at least my saying she never reported the abuse I told her about.a

    • Finger pointing, accusing, blaming won't work. They will only make matter worse to worst. A good dialogue with a resolution to rectify things that went wrong and unwavering commitment. The party involved should be strong enough to abide what has been agreed. Two persons alone won't do the solution. There should be others must be involved. In your case, your mother or you father, the school administrator or teacher, and the collaborator for that matter. This won't take to resolve overnight. It will take a long probation or even a lifetime.

    • I am sorry to hear your story. I had been a timid person during my primary and secondary level in school. There are random of bullying from my classmates. At first, I ignore it. But then, when things getting worse; I started to reinvented myself and learn how to fightback.
