A Stray is no Different From a Pedigree

A Pedigree breed is what we thought would be ideal to adopt as pets and we did move in that direction. We have had two of the pedigree pets and others a mix with a strain of pedigree in all of them. After all keeping a pedigree is a status symbol but that was not the reason why we wanted our pets to be pedigree  We thought a pedigree behaved better than a stray. We were wrong.

A time came when we wanted to call it a day after having lost our pets to old age. But in walks a wee bit of a pup right inside our property. There was no choice but to adopt her. She was a stray but she turned out to be the best behaved pet ever.

Here females have no homes. But this female was embraced with open arms. She was shooed away from all houses it looked like.

We named her Preiti. Preiti gave us a lot of trouble in the initial stages. There is nothing that she did not break that which she could lay her baby teeth on. We had to puppy proof the house.  And finally she grew into a dignified little girl – a beautiful companion.

Preiti has her likes and dislikes. She hates to sleep on something that has been there for many days. She pulls the sheet out until we give her a new sheet to sleep on. In this video clip you will see here wanting me to take out that paper. This is her daytime resting place

Preiti is not happy when I am on my computer. She will scratch herself which she knows I do not like. The moment I get up and join her she stops scratching.

She watches out for reptiles in the garden and alerts us. She is very careful not to go anywhere near them.

I could write volumes about her – may be in another blog.

These strays are assets if we train them well.

    • I do think that stray animals can be tamed if being trained.I have a stray dog and a cat.
They were also trained to protect the house against bad elements. There are some house pets that we can't force them to do things. They can't bark whenever seeing a stranger.

    • Well, the definition of stray and pedigree are entirely different. Pedigree has to do with a class of animal. For example, if the dog is purebred or of mix breed. A stray is an animal that has no place to call home regardless of its breed. I say this because we found a stray chihuahua once (we still have her). Just like children, all dogs have a unique personality about them. They are all different. I have three dogs and they all act differently. My pit bull is quieter and laid back, while the chihuahua likes to run around barking at everything. Their puppy (yes, the pit bull and the chihuahua mated) likes to run around and jump up and down and is the happiest puppy ever that loves to tear up furniture.

    • My first dog was a purebred miniature shetland sheep dog. She lived till the ripe old age of 16 years and never developed any diseases except for a little bit of arthritis. She was also a joy to have and to hold and to cherish. My second dog was a miniature American Eskimo, pure white with a brown nose and brown eyes. But being of the category spitz dog, she was quite the handful and needed constant training and watching. She would even jump the fence and that is what happened one day. She jumped the fence and even though I looked high and low for her, I never found her. My third dog was a mix German Shepherd and Husky. She also lived till about 17 years old.She was definitely a joy to hold, to love, to pet and cherish. I really enjoyed my walks with her especially in the winter. Being part Husky, she fared much better when it was cold. All dogs, whether purebred or stray or mixed breeds deserve a loving hand and home.
