Can you believe that this man was in prison for 52 years for a crime that he did NOT commit?  It just goes to show that there are innocent people in jail/prison for crimes that they didn’t commit.  Now, I have a different outlook on the death penalty, one just never knows for sure if a person is really innocent or guilty!!  To read about this “w…[Read more]

JoDee Stout wrote a new post, The “Newbie” 8 years, 6 months ago

Yes, even at my age, I can be considered a “newbie.”  I’m not new to writing on writing sites,I’ve written on several sites before coming here but I’m a “newbie” to this site.  As with anything it takes some t […]

    • Nice post. Newbies soon become oldbies. I hope we all get to enjoy this site. sharing this on twitter for you.

    • This was the first article I have read today at this site. It is nice to be a newbie here at literacybase. I am going to start at first base so before I can get to home run I have to learn more about this site. So far I like it a lot.

    • Yes, I agree with you. We will never too old to be a newbie. We always learn in the journey of our life. I am always glad that we are given the opportunities to learn, and now with the Internet, we can always learn something new too.

I also agree with you saying, we are learning from our mistakes, and that’s how we gain the experience.

I am also a newbie to this site. Let’s learn and explore the site together! ^_^

    • I think there will be a lot of newbies coming here soon! And probably a lot of them will be “old farts” like me 🙂

    • The thought that newbies are ‘ignoramuses’ needs a second look. Most veterans on writing sites treat newbies as though they are illiterates 😀 There could be many among them with postgraduate degrees and expert writers too.

    • I’m a newbie here, too, even though I’ve written on many of the same sites you have. It’s always a learning curve at first.

    • Yeah! Everyone is a newbie in a new place. But then a newbie will one day become an oldies!! Lol! But I agreed with bestwriter, because some oldies treats newbies in a new site as dommies which is not good. Remember a child grows as the multiplies.

    • Everyone is newbie on every site because he will write first on that site and after this he will be old with the passage of time. When you’re a new writer, it can be tough to present yourself professionally.

It’s hard to see how you can get started in this line of work! It’s that old thing where it’s hard to get a job without experience, and hard to get experience without a job.

There is an easy way to break out of this cycle, though. You can create a writer website that impresses clients and make them want to hire you. Yes, even as a newbie.

Lots of new writers put off creating a writer website because they’re waiting to get some gigs and have some clips to post.

If you don’t want to lie, what can you write on your newbie writer site to attract clients?

You could have a blog under a tab, or a link to a blog you write elsewhere. That’s a start. But optional, especially if you’re not interested in paid blogging gigs.

What you definitely need are three things:

      A compelling Home page
      A strong About page
      Easy-to-find Contacts
The Home page is all about the prospective clients you want, and how you will solve their problems. Think about the type of magazine or business you want to write for and what they need. Write about how you do that.

Emphasize the strengths you bring to the table. Are you prompt? Reliable? A stickler for grammar? Let them know.

End it with a strong call to action that tells them what to do next: Contact you.

Your About page tells clients why you love the types of writing you do. What made you the writer you are today? Fill us in a bit on your personal life…but through the lens of what a client would want to know.

In other words, not the story about how you wrote a poem with the first crayon you were ever handed at age 4. And not your whole life story, blow by blow.

I have a college degree, but it has nothing to do with my many jobs throughout my life. When I was younger, my dream was in lala-land, and I thought I can make a living as an artist or a novelist. I am not that lucky, so I think on demand job is better for some, which worked out beautifully for my oldest son!

I am in that boat now with my mother and I have brought this question up to a priest at confession. He said to do the best you can and lift your burden up to God.

My mom is a difficult woman, complaining 24/7, and nothing can make her happy. I live on a limited income with a teenager boy, but no matter how much I give, it is never enough to…[Read more]

I want to have four children because I don’t like odd numbers, haha! I ended up with two boys and one girl. I had my youngest son when I was already 40 and it wasn’t fun being scared out of my mind by all the physicians. If it was up to me, I would have another if I could, just so I would have four 🙂

I call my mom “MA” on most days, and sometimes MOM. As for my father, I use to say DAD, Daddy!

My children called me MOM and sometimes MUMSY!

@Lee Ka We have children story books, two to three shells full to the ceiling! I donated them to the local library, and some to the Salvation Army! Our house now is small enough for me to manage and keep cleaned. There is no extra rooms or storage space to keep anything.

I want to live a simpler life, less stuffs, and only the necessaries!

IcyBC wrote a new post, Make Watching TV a Fun and Learning Time 8 years, 6 months ago

Do you know that the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend that children two and under should avoid TV and other media altogether?

TV is one of the most powerful forces in shaping our children’s lives.  It […]

    • A really informative article.

    • I couldn’t believe only 39 minutes talking to the kids per week! Even on a bad day, I spend that much time in an afternoon talking to my kids….

      • I have seen children as young as 2 on tablet at a restaurant without a word to the parents many times, and the parents are on their phones. It is sad really when family dinner time is not being utilized for communication!

    • I think when children watch with parents, that is good.
If parents just use TV as the babysitter, then that is the saddest thing in life.
It all boils down to how the parents manage it.

    • I cannot imagine any kid being left alone while watching tv. That is the main reason they learn not to have any real people around them. Their virtual world becomes theirs.
