She is one the important goddess in the Hindu religion the first in the  trinity among the goddesses the other two being Goddess Lakshmi and Goddess Parvati. These goddesses are the consorts of the male trinity of the gods Brahma, Maha Vishnu and Maheshwara or Lord Shiva. She is the goddess of Knowledge and represents the free flow of consciousness  knowledge, music, arts, wisdom and learning which she blesses and provides as a vara or boon to her dear devotees when they pray to her for the same.

 

When Lord Bramha  undertook the creation of the world through creative speech Goddess Saraswati was born in his mouth or tongue says the legend. She is called the mother of Vedas and embodies the wisdom of Devi. She is also revered as Lord Brahma’s Shakti. She is the consort of Lord Brahma who is the creator of the universe.

 

She has four hands and  holds a veena with two hands one on the top and the other below and Vedas on the one hand below and a japamala on the hand above.  She is known and identified with the color white her skin color is white and bright which signifies the ultimate truth, knowledge and wisdom. She is seated on a lotus or lily which again signifies the color white. Her vahana or vehicle is a hansa or swan which again is white.

 

She has a calm, pleasing and composed disposition and her face radiates knowledge in the cosmic form which also reaches the earth and is a goddess of dawn. In sanskrit Saras means “Essence” Swa means “Self” so in  English it means “Essential knowledge”. One more meaning is Saras means “Flow” wati means “Women”.

 

There are 108 different names by which she is prayed.  She is an important goddess prayed on any Hindu festival or pooja due to her being identified with knowledge and wisdom. Some of the important Hindu festivals on which she is prayed are Vasant Panchami, Dasara, on Diwali along with goddess lakshmi.

 

She is an important goddess approached by her devotees before starting education of their young children. When a child starts to speak and has to step into the field of education and studies a religious ceremony known as Aksharabhaysa  meaning initiation into the field of knowledge is conducted.

 

Here special mantras and specific poojas are done for the goddess and the beginning into education  is made in the presence of the goddess who is the deity there or even for any important event in life which involves applying ones mental faculties that is use of the mind like exams, first day in job, an interview, trying to bag a business contract or even making a important decision in life or other such things one prays and takes the blessing of the goddess to achieve success.

 

She is the one who enlivens creation and is one of the many  faces reflected in the Image of the Divine Mother.  There are 108 different names of the goddess which are chanted and some of them are Vaagdevi, Hamsavahani, Mahaabhadraayi, Bramhini and so on they are chanted in the Saraswati Ashtottara Shatanamaavali. Before chanting each name one starts the procedure with a Om as a prefix.

 

All of us need knowledge to be used in the right way if we have to grow wise and get enlightened. One more thing is if we misuse what ever knowledge we have and use it for wrong deeds then we will  forget the knowledge or the same knowledge will cause harm to us and others so one has to be careful when using it.

 

If you chant  this hymn in the praise of the goddess with true heart which you have then you will be blessed with knowledge and wisdom as She pleased with her devotees calling her in such a way and use the knowledge gained for the benefit of the world. This is in Sanskrit language “Shri Saraswatii Namahstubhyam varade kaama rupini, twam aham praarthene devii vidyaadanam cha dehi me” which means I pray to goddess Saraswati in praise of her to grant me knowledge, wisdom and enlightenment.

 

There are many other mantras, hyms and strotras which can be chanted as a regular habit. So if you want Knowledge, wisdom and enlightenment  then pray  to goddess Saraswati and be blessed.
