You Let The Wookie Win

We were standing on line, maybe we were invisible, as the door man was passing in other people and keeping us out.   Then my friend announced happily; “Let the Wookie Win!”  With that, smiling, we came off the line and walked away, going somewhere else.

The term which makes up the title and is referred to above, comes from Star Wars.  A character, called a Wookie, is long and tall and furry and a very poor loser.

Playing a meaningless game, where the only ‘winning’ is saying “I Won”,  why stress?  Let the Wookie Win, as Han Solo advised.

Sometimes you’ll be doing something or be somewhere, and some Wookie will come up to argue about things you don’t care about, or, conversely, you care but you don’t care what the Wookie thinks.  So, why argue? Go; “Hmmm,” and move away.

Too often in life we get drag into arguments we don’t care about,  or we don’t care what someone else really thinks.

Gordon was arguing about something, I was maintaining my position, when Greg called me;  “Just a second..” he says.

I excused myself and walked to Greg, who said;  “Do you really care what Gordon thinks about anything?”

I stood in silence for a few seconds, then replied; “No.”

“So why are you arguing?”

I realised that instead of doing my tasks, I was letting Gordon set my agenda.  As I returned, I took my things, said, “Excuse me…” and walked away.   I let the Wookie win.

This philosophy has prevented me from engaging in conversations set by Wookies.

The other day, Selma came up to bark in my face.   I’m a vegetarian.   She was saying; “I can eat anything,  I don’t have to stay to any kind of diet and deny myself…”

I said, “Mmm…” and walked away.

My friends asked; “What was she on about?”

I told them, and added, “I don’t care if she eats her relatives.”

I know what I will eat, do, think, want, be, etc.   Only people I care about can get me into a discussion.  Other then that, it is ‘hi’ ‘bye’.

Sometimes, playing a free no prize game on the ‘Net I’ll find people are cheating.  Scrabble has a cheat in which it doesn’t just find words, it shows you where to place the letters.  When I know you are using that cheat, either I’ll slow down my playing to 23 hr 59 minutes between moves, or forfeit.  I let the Wookie ‘win’.

Too much time is wasted arguing with people you don’t care about, maintaining views that are ‘no prize wins’, and letting a Wookie write your agenda.

If you just limit your conflicts with persons whom you have a chance of convincing or whose opinion matters to you, then you make your life a lot more pleasant.

Why get involved in a debate with someone whose opinion means nothing?

Instead of arguing, walk away.  Why raise your blood pressure, waste your hearing, when you couldn’t care less about the opinions of certain people?   Why get into a debate when nothing they say matters to you?  Let the Wookie Win.  He can’t change your views.

When you are talking/debating with anyone whose opinion means nothing to you, why are you doing it?  If it part of your job, or you are engaged in a public debate, that is one thing.   But if it’s just the Wookie expressing his opinion, let him win and walk away.
