I’ve never experimented with agar agar, but I’m glad you wrote this review about it. I have found unflavoured gelatin to be expensive in the past; I’ll definitely be looking to see if the agar agar is better priced here, as it is in Ireland.
-
Yeah, it ends up being a little bit cheap since you only needed a tiny amount to set it. Although if you like the “wobbly” texture of gelatin, you might find Agar Agar a little bit “hard”. So I’d suggest use it for occasions where you just crave for a jelly dessert but won’t really care about the texture. 🙂
-
-
Yeah it is a matter of preference. I’d personally won’t give up gelatin ultimately but for instances like this where it is only for my son’s daily snack, then it is alright. If I wanted to make dessert like cathedral windows, I’d still go for gelatin.
-
First time to hear the word agar agar LOL.Thanks ,anyway for I got the info from your post about it.
-
HAHA! I only learned about this as I watched various cooking shows. You can definitely learn something new with these things. I think it is mostly used for Asian desserts but in the Philippines, ALSA is the typical brand to use or the old-fashioned gelatin bars to make jelly-based desserts.

When I was a kid, I love eating gelatin used as toppings in a halo-halo or a grounded ice mixed with milk, sugar and several toppings aside from gelatin. I have tried eating molded gelatin of various color in one of the parties tendered by my friend. It tasted good.
There are a lot to choose in the market for gelatin products. This gelatin could be molded to a design which the one to prepare has preferred to select. Kids do love eating the gelatin in a colorful design. Adult do love it likewise.
-
Oh definitely! I love cathedral windows and can eat the entire thing from Goldilock’s in one sitting. I like gelatin in halo-halo as well but I’d prefer the sweetened bananas and beans as well. I am just trying to be a little bit more frugal since Agar Agar is unsweetened and I haven’t given my son (or tried not to give) a lot of artificially sweetened gelatin to my son yet as a snack. I sweeten Agar Agar with pressed fruit juice and a little bit of honey or maple syrup.
-
Halo-halo is what we usually ordered from any store which sells cool foods, especially during the summer. This short-order cold food is stuffed with various pieces of fruits. Eating it is like quenching your thirst with a cold water.
Halo-halo is the most saleable cold foods among the people here in our place. It is too deliciously. It could easily be prepared for a just a couple of minute you could have it and could enjoy eating it.
-
I have fond memories of eating halo-halo when I was a kid since I have an aunt selling it for her business. I love it especially with rice crispies and some fresh melon, too! Good times! 🙂

I have tried both, agar agar powder and the jelly strips.
Both turned out nice but I prefer the jelly strips.
It gives the natural clear see through jelly texture and smells good.
For the agar agar powder, it did dilute easily but the smell isn’t as good before. It is cheaper for the powder compare to jelly strips.
The picture shown is also sold here-
Yeah, Agar Agar does smells a bit different than gelatin that’s why for “serious” desserts, I still use gelatin. But for a quick snack for my son or us, I’d rather that I use Agar Agar since it is a vegetarian option not to mention the smell fades off quickly if you put on enough pressed juice to sweeten it 🙂
-
-
Oh, really? It’s been a long time since I used gelatin so I didn’t know that it is not as good as before. But I think if I were to cook gelatinous desserts like panna cotta or cathedral windows, I’d still use gelatin because the texture needs to be wobbly. The last batch of my son’s jelly snack, I think I was able to achieve the gelatin consistency but it was a matter of luck, LOL!
-
Yeah, I stumbled upon that information from a parenting website when I was looking for healthier food snack ideas for my son. Apparently, Agar Agar was derived from a seaweed and gelatin is from a cow’s stomach.
-
HAHA glad to help 🙂 It is nice to share knowledge around the Internet!
-
Yeah. I actually learned about agar agar thru a TV show but never used it until my son is born. I am still a bit biased with gelatin since I grew up eating it but would not mind using it for snacks because of the price.

I will try this recipe in the very near future. It really sounds great.
-
Sure, give it a go and hope you will like it as I did 🙂
-
-
Looks like it would be good I would try it
-
Thanks and give it a shot! Customize it to suit your liking 🙂

Will do thank you

I see your recipe is heavy on the cumin. So is mine! And I also love my chili with lots of cheese and sour cream.
I don’t think it’s so odd to use different beans. We tend to make it these days with a mix of several beans that I buy in the bulk section of our grocery store. There are a couple of blends, but most have kidney beans (red, white, or both) and either pinto or Romano beans in them. I used to just use the red kidney beans, but I’ve gotten quite fond of having different textures and colours in the recipe.
-
I love cumin! I think that’s what makes chili con carne tastes like “that”. Oh yeah, it is a lot cheaper to buy beans in bulk. I also do that especially during winter when I make soup a lot more often. So I end up with “loose” variants of beans and it just doesn’t make sense to buy more, LOL! I am not a food critic or anything so the taste is not that far off if you ask me. Anyway, good food is something we enjoy 🙂
-
-
Wow, looks so yummy and tasty. I plan to cook this recipe at home this weekend. You make me hungry now.LOL.
-
HAHA, chili con carne is really comforting and easy-to-eat, isn’t it? I used to crave and order it a lot when dining in a Mexican restaurant so I am just so happy to learn how easy it is to cook at home!
-
-
HAHA, so what was the verdict after they tried it out? Did they like it? I hope they did! Otherwise, my recipe will be to blame for it, LOL!
-
HAHA, whew! Glad to know they liked it! 🙂 Now they discovered your a chef within! I think it is really helpful to find these recipes posted online since we can try to make at home. It adds to the variety of the usual dishes we eat, too!

-
I appreciate you being that so sensitive on your body parts.Nice post .
-
Thanks! Yeah, I am not really picky when it comes to skincare. In fact, I rarely buy anything overly expensive, not unless I really need it or can’t find a cheap alternative that works “fine”.
-
-
It is my attitude that every time I read a review of any kind, of any product, I always expect something good, something that generally benefits the users. I am sorry to read about this product for skin care of what you have considered as uncomfortable in your part. My personal feeling is that there are a lot of skincare in the market, and there are, of course, a lot to select from. No wonder why, you mention that you are firmed yet to decide to finally purchase the said product, for you are expecting that there are still more in the market, which could be ideal for your delicate skin.
-
Oh, it was not too much of an issue, to be honest. I am quite lucky my skin is not as sensitive as others who might’ve experienced breakouts when using something new to their skin (I know, my husband is one of those). I think this is an average product for me. I may or may not buy again, but of course, if I have other options, I’d rather not have a slight stinging sensation on my skin as I use it.
-
-
Nice your skin is used to different kinds of lotion. I do not apply lotion to my skin.It feels itchy and dust usually sticks to my skin.
-
Yeah, I am quite lucky 🙂 It allows me to use cheap products and to try out different things especially when I get tired of the scent or the product. Hmm, have you tried to use a non-greasy alternative?
-
-
Nice friend. I do not use lotion dust stick to my skin hehehe. There is one I like Jergens. I might use it again.
-
Yeah, it might help you to moisturize your skin. Or if you have sensitive skin, have you tried to make your own skincare products? Or use something that is aloe vera-based?
-
-
HAHA, I think aloe vera-based products are really nice on the skin, especially if you live in warmer countries. During summer, I can’t be bothered using oil-based skincare. It is just too sticky!
-
Hehehehe, lots of fun here too if not take a post or topic seriously.LOL.I try to shop in mall during Christmas hahahaha to have a bigger discount for it is Christmas.
-
-
-
Yeah, they have a really pleasant after taste. I have tried other brands for toothpaste but it’s not the same. It might’ve been because we are using it for a long time now and buy it out of habit.
-
Oh I think I haven’t used Darlie (or seen it here) before. Yeah, that’s one thing I don’t like about brushing – not being able to eat because it leaves the mouth tasting minty. I try to brush every meal and make sure I don’t eat anything at least an hour after I do. That helps a lot actually.
-
Is Colgate Pro cheaper than Thermoseal? I found “especially made toothpastes” cost a lot more than the ones readily available in the groceries.
-
Same here! I never really bothered with the beads, whitening etc but love to try if it’s on sale. It is good nobody in our household ever needs specialty toothpastes so I guess that’s why we can buy anything – even the cheapest options there!

this looks like a good pasta recipe for weekends.
I had never seen reddish type.
The beetroot color sure had blended well with this pasta.
I think it would make a nutritious meal for the whole family.
Thanks for sharing-
Oh it became red because of the beetroot 🙂 Yeah, it’s a nice way to eat something healthier and I thought it would be good for us to have it mixed with pasta. It’s also a nice change from the typical pasta sauces I make.
-
-
I love tortellini and beets, so I am really keen to try this recipe! I will have to see if maybe I can locate the pancetta and ricotta tortellini. I don’t think I’ve ever seen these on offer in our grocery stores.
Pancetta, sadly, is very difficult to get where I live now. And what I can get is nothing like the lovely, peppery stuff I used to buy in Montreal! It would be fun if the tortellini filling tasted like the pancetta I’m used to….
-
Oh, that’s too bad. Do you have M&S over there? When we are craving for cured meat (especially for Italian cured meats) that’s where we buy it from. The price is not so bad as well and they go on special when nearing BBE – so there are times we wait for that, too 🙂
I hope you’ll like this pasta dish as well when you make it!
-
We’re in a very small town with a small city nearby. No M&S anywhere close by, that I’m aware of. Probably it would be in one of the bigger cities, that are 4-7 hours’ drive from us.
We have a man here who is from Germany and learned to make sausages and smoked deli meats from his father back home. There are lots of great meats in his shop, but no pancetta. I’ve asked there if he would carry it, but the staff say no 🙁
-
Aw, that’s too bad 🙁 But come to think about it, if you have that quick access to authentic German sausages, then it is not too bad! To be honest, we are always craving for German sausages charcoal grilled during Oktoberfest. And I wish we have somebody here who can easily make it for us, too!
-
Yes, it’s just glorious to go into his shop! We enjoy many other lovely sausages and cold cuts. Just not pancetta!
-
-
-
-
-
Oh, I won’t personally eat it for breakfast and I bet the Italians will get mad at you, LOL (kidding!). It is a form of pasta so I think to eat it for lunch or dinner is good. Well, if you are used to having a heavy breakfast, then it might be alright, too?
-
LOL! I think some Italians can be forgiving. But I have a friend who really sticks to her Italian roots and tradition no matter what!
-
-
-
Oh, definitely! We used to celebrate Father’s day on the day itself (when I was still in my home country) and it is always a nightmare! It doesn’t matter whether you’re dining in a mid-range or expensive restaurant – everything is just filled up! So the only way to get guaranteed seats is to be there before mealtime to avoid the surge.

I think one of the oldest wine bar in Ireland and most of the visitors go there and enjoy eveninga nd nights there.
ely bar & brasserie, in Dublin’s Docklands, is Ireland’s oldest wine venue located within beautifully restored wine vaults. The original 1821 cellars, now with 2 fully licensed bars and a heated waterside terrace, have been transformed to become the architecturally stunning venue it is today.
Whether it’s dinner for 2 or 200, or drinks and bar bites with friends, ely bar & brasserie offers one of the most unique and atmospheric dining experiences in Ireland.
I love Ely, especially the original one and the one they had in GCQ. However, this one left me a little bit short. For starters, it’s decor is a little less inviting and very cold. The drinks were grand, the lack of marshmallows in hot chocolate a little disappointing but doable. What surprised me were the prices for 2 dishes we ordered- the nuts for €3.50 (wasn’t by choice

HAHA, yeah it was a gamble. But I thought since I only spent a few cents on these, it doesn’t matter whether it arrived or not (although I’ll make a really bad review if it didn’t!).
-
Yeah it is quite funny to see complaints about shipping. I mean, not unless the complaint was poor customer service or the item never arriving, slow shipping could only mean that the item got stuck in customs not to mention standard shipping is ALWAYS slower! I’d still go for Born Pretty for small items like nail art stuff because it is really cheap in comparison to other shops around here or online (ie Etsy). So long as the item arrived within the expected timeframe, I don’t fuss. If I badly needed the item ASAP, I’d spend more money and just buy it here.

Sounds like a pretty good restaurant. Where is the restaurant located? The portions seem alright because you stated that you and your son were able to share a dish. Italian food is delicious and it’s great to be able not only have a great meal but to enjoy the scenery as well while dining. Keep enjoying Manifesto. Have a great weekend.
-
Yeah they are one of our go-to restaurants here. It is located in Rathmines (Ireland). The complete address is also included in the article and the website but not sure why it shows as an anchor text (About Us).
-
-
Here where I live we hardly have any choice of restaurants but during my tours I have tried every kind of cuisine Italian included.
-
Oh when traveling, it is a must to try out different cuisines – especially if you don’t have it handy in your local area.
-
-
Oh yeah we did! It’s especially nice to be able to eat in restaurants we used to visit but haven’t visited since having a baby 🙂
-
Wow, what a wonderful wold and moment of your own.
-
Oh it was definitely nice eating out – especially now that my son is a lot manageable when dining out. 🙂
-
-
The food looks absolutely stunning! I have also had some really great experiences bringing small children to a traditional Italian restaurant. The food and service were impeccable, but it was the way the staff catered to our little one’s needs and called her by pet names that really left an impression.
I hope you get to return to Manifesto as often as you’d like!
-
Oh definitely! Italians like kids in general since my son was pretty “popular” especially with the grannies when we went to Rome last year, too.
I hope so, too! I mean, things are starting to “feel” a little bit better when it comes to dining out with our son. So I am hoping that we get to return to eat on restaurants we avoided the past 2 years!
