A lot of times snakes will use roads as a way to heat up by laying on the asphalt for warmth, especially when it gets hot & humid in different parts of the world they will use these roads at night when that kind of weather makes them become nocturnal. This happens with many other wildlife too.

Sometimes snakes have to cross these roads to get back & forth from their feeding grounds to their den sites. Or, how about Turtles that want to get from one pond to the next for feeding or looking for a place to lay their eggs. Animals too make a dash to cross the road in the night and when this happens they can become targets for humans.

While one understand sometimes running over reptiles, turtles or other wildlife can’t be avoided while driving, due to speed, difficulty in visibility, high speed driving etc. One can be certainly be sensible and use presence of mind especially if he is driving through a forested, rocky or hilly area for the sake of nature and wildlife by anticipating presence of wildlife crossing the road and maintaining a speed which is decided by the government. In the night time traffic can be halted and can resume in the early morning as there wont be any mishaps on both sides.

In different parts of the world it has been happening on a somewhat regular basis of elephants other big cats crossing the roads and railway tracks and getting hurt badly resulting in death.  The government should see that roads or tracks are not laid in the forest areas even if they are not core areas. One more reason the government tries to do such a thing is to cut the costs as the distance gets reduced so does the time but at the cost of loss to the nature which cannot be reversed easily.

It is better we learn not to meddle with nature in the name of so called commercial development and human progress at the cost of wildlife. While humans have a voice and can represent different fora and vent their grievances the sad part is wildlife cannot do so. Hence it is imperative on our part to protect them and see no harm occurs to them.
