Tigers are one of the majestic creatures  living on the planet. They have been there around for millions of  years on this planet and have helped maintain the ecosystem and the food chain. If these big cats would not have been there, their would be over population of a number of other species resulting ecological imbalance. Now survival of this very species which is India’s national animal and is present in different parts of the world too is under threat severe threat in the 21st century.

Tigers have a well-developed sense of touch that they use to navigate through darkness, detect danger & attack prey. They have different types of Whiskers that detect sensory information & are differentiated by their location on their body. The root of the whiskers displaces blood when it comes into contact with something, thereby amplifying movement. Sensory nerves detect this movement and send signals to the brain for interpretation.

The mystacial whiskers are located on the tiger’s muzzle (snout) and are used when attacking prey and navigating in the dark. The tiger uses these whiskers to sense where they should inflict a bite. When navigating through darkness the tiger’s pupils dilate to let more light enter the eye to increase their vision.

The dilated pupils of their eyes assist their night vision but makes focusing on objects up-close difficult. The tiger’s mystacial whiskers help it feel its way through the dark. Just  in case you happen to meet a tiger by mistake do not look into its eyes, run, shout, scream and startle it. Just freeze your body take deep breaths, try to act as if ignoring it  and  make a dash to the best place which is immediately available.

Tigers do sense their prey from a distance and try to stalk them slowly from behind the bushes by stealth to maintain the element of surprise in the attack and to catch  the prey off guard. The facial whiskers of Tiger are about 12-15 centimeters in length. The facial area of the Tiger has numerous sensory neurons that can detect even the slightest change in air pressure when passing by an object !!!
